A BEGINNERS’ WORKSHOP TO BASIC ANIMATION
INTRODUCTION
Animation has been a medium of universal appeal beyond the limits of age and nationalities and has been
explored as a potent medium of not only entertainment but also of communication, education and
empowerment. Today animation is very popular across our country and we see a great level of enthusiasm
among people to learn this medium with great interest. Animation is a sequence of frames (or images) that,
when played in an order at sufficient speed, presents a smoothly moving image likes a film or video. An
animation can be digitized video, computer-generated graphics, or a combination.
In this workshop the participants will learn about basic principles of animation through a combination of
exercises, lectures, presentations and animation film screenings with an ultimate aim of making the
participants familiar with basics of animation to open ways of advanced learning in animation film design.
OBJECTIVES
• To develop the understanding of basic animation through a set of basic exercises.
• Exploring basic principles of animation
• Understanding tools and techniques
• Technical aspects of animation film making
COURSE CONTENTS
• Introduction to History of Animation
• Principles of animation
• The workshop will give special emphasis on learning and exploration through a set of exercises including:
Animated toy, Flip Book, Bouncing Ball, Pendulum, Metamorphosis etc.
• Exposure about technical aspects of animation film making.
• Technical Exposure of television media.
METHODOLOGY
• Explanation of the exercises of the day
• Animation Film Screening
• Individual assignments
• Final presentation of the work done by the participants of the workshop.
Anchor Faculty and Subject Experts
Sekhar Mukherjee, Communication design faculty, Coordinator of the animation department. Sekhar’s
childhood passion was drawing funny stuffs on the wall, which resulted in his departure from CA study
(Chartered Accountancy) for CA study (CARTOON ANIMATION) and after 2 years of baptism by fire
with Economic Times, a newspaper in Calcutta, as illustrator, cartoonist and info-graphic artist, he joined
NID in 1992 for 2 and half years Post Graduate course in Animation Film Design. After completing his
course at NID he worked on various projects ranging from design consultancy, animation film making,
children’s book illustration, cartoon and caricature, writing, set design, training et al. He believes in
constant learning and unlearning he attended couple of stop gap short term courses on Film Appreciation
from Film Institute, Pune and Multimedia Content creation from Jadavpur University, Calcutta in between
his professional practice. He loves to teach subjects like Drawing for Animation, Illustration, Character
Design, Storyboarding, Animation Basics, Advance Animation, Comic book/Graphic Novel and Experimental
Animation. He is also Chairman of NID Film Club, Festival Director of Chitrakatha-International Student
Animation Festival, active member of TASI(The Animation Society of India, Mumbai) and editorial board
member of animation: an Interdisciplinary journal, Sage Publication, UK and actively involved with the local
and global development of animation education and industry trend.
Atul Chauhan
An electronics and sound engineer, Atul has an experience of more than twenty years as technical support
for Animation and film & video education. Presently working with National Institute of Design (NID) as
senior technical instructor and handling the charge of studio coordinator of Animation film design studio.
Apart from this, he has also contributed video- sound support to Discovery of India – exhibition setup in
Nehru center Mumbai, My land my people – exhibition setup in Bal Bhavan new Delhi, Teletext – a video
film on teletex services in New Delhi, Dholavira – a video film on dholavira site in kutchh, Udaipur a Pink
city – student diploma film, SEWA animation project. He also contributed for Video documentary of a
World Bank Project in west Bengal.
Sanjiv Shah:
With a background of fine arts Sanjiv has been working as animation assistant in Animation Department in
NID since 1987. Presently, he is working as technical instructor and providing technical guidance (and
troubleshooting) in animation, editing, and compositing software like Premiere, After Effects, and
Photoshop to animation students during production as well as post production stages. Prior to this he has
worked as a, freelance graphic designer & layout artist for advertising agencies. At NID, he has worked as
animation assistant on professional Projects like My Land my People ( Film:Story of Tails), Discovery of
India(Film: A Day in Fatehpur Sikri, His Master’s Choice), Water Mission (Signature Tune), Compositing
and Editing for At 17 Guards(ATGM) (Film: Tank Busters). He has also been involved in taking Seminars
and animation workshops for children at Balbhavan held at Delhi, Pentamedia Graphics at Chennai with
senior faculty member of NID, Involved as a pre-production artist for 3days workshop held for
Madhubani Artists at NID and also headed the Animation Students’ team for communication design and
festival promotion during Chitrakatha’07(International student animation film festival) held at NID.
Duration
The programme will be of five days. Please note that the workshop will be highly intensive and so you are
requested to keep all the evenings except the first day free for the workshop sessions.
