C C D C : Solution

The document contains solutions to two questions about functions and their domains and ranges. For the first question, it formulates an argument symbolically using propositional logic, representing it with a truth table. The truth table shows the argument is valid. For the second question, it finds the domain and range of a given function f(x) by determining the domain of the function and inverse function, and taking their combination as the overall range.

Question No 1: Marks=10

Formulate the argument symbolically and test its validity using the truth table.

The number is not divisible by 12 if and only if it is not divisible by 3 and 4. The number is divisible by
12 Therefore it is divisible by 3 and 4.

Solution:

Let

c =Number is divisible by 12

d =Number is divisible by 3 and 4

~c ↔ ~d

c d ~c ~d ~c ↔ ~d
T T F F T
T F F T F
F T T F F
F F T T T

The argument is true when both are true the result is true as shown in the first
row.
Question No 2:
Marks=10

Solution:

x 1
f ( x) 
x2

To find domain

x 1
Domain of x  2

x  2 or x  2

Range
We know that function range is combine domain of inverse of function.

Find Inverse of function

x 1 1 2x
:
x  2 x 1

1  2x
Inverse of function x  1

Domain of inverse

1  2x
x 1

x  1 or x  1

Combining the intervals

f ( x) x  1 f ( x) x  1
