Classes of Fire
Fire classes and extinguisher labels are different throughout the world. The following are used
in Brazil. Fire extinguishers are red, but they have color-coded panels.

A Green Ordinary Combustibles (wood, paper, fabric, and most plastics)
B Red Flammable Liquids (oils, grease, gasoline, and paints)
C Blue Energized Electrical Equipment
D Yellow Combustible Metals (magnesium, titanium, potassium)
K Black Cooking oils and grease in kitchens
Fire Extinguishers
Choose the correct class of fire extinguisher for the fire you intend to fight.
Fire Extinguisher/Extinguishing Agent Fire Class
Water A only
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) B and C
Mechanical Foam A and B
Multi-Purpose – Dry Chemical A, B, C
Class D – Dry Powder D
Class K – Wet Chemical K
Using the wrong extinguisher to fight a fire can have serious consequences. For example, if a
water-based extinguisher is used on a flammable liquid fire, the fire has the potential to flare
up, spread and cause serious injury.
