ST ND: Assignment 6

The document discusses Newton's laws of motion and concepts related to force and motion. It provides definitions and examples to explain impulse, momentum, acceleration, and how an unbalanced force affects the motion of an object. It includes 10 practice problems about calculating force, acceleration, momentum, and time taken to stop a moving object with applied braking forces. Student email IDs are provided for each section for submitting assignments.

ASSIGNMENT 6

1. What is the unit of momentum and change of momentum in S.I.?

2. What is the unit of rate of change of momentum in S.I.? What is

the short form of this unit?

3. Identify two physical quantities, whose direction match with

direction of force?
4. Which one requires greater force: (i) to generate motion of a
body of mass 'm' from 0 to 'v' in time 't'; or (ii) to generate motion of
a body of mass '2m' from 0 to '2v' in time '4t'.

5. A body moves due north with velocity 40 m/s. A force is applied

on it and the body continues to move due north with velocity 35 m/s.
W. .What is the direction of rate of change of momentum,if it takes
some time for that change and what is the direction of applied
external force?

6. Suppose that an object is accelerating at a rate of 2 m/s2. If the

net force is tripled and the mass is halved, then what is the new
acceleration of the object?
7. Calculate the momentum of a 110-kg football player running at
8.0 m/s. Compare the player’s momentum with the momentum of a
hard-thrown 0.410-kg football that has a speed of 25.0 m/s.

8. During a tennis match, a player hits the ball reaching a speed of

58 m/s. What is the average force exerted on the 0.057-kg tennis
ball by the player, assuming that the ball’s speed just after impact is
58 m/s and that the initial horizontal component of the velocity
before impact is negligible and that the ball remained in contact
with the racquet for 5.0 ms (milliseconds)?

9. An object of mass 10kg is moving with the initial velocity of

10m/s. A constant force acts on it for 4sec giving it a speed of 2m/s
in opposite direction. Find the acceleration and the force.

10. A car of mass 1000kg is moving at a certain speed when a

constant braking force 1000N acts
on it for 5sec and speed of the car reduced to half the original
speed. Find the further time required to stop the car if the same
constant force acts on it.
