Noun
Definition of Noun:
A noun is the name of person, a place, a thing, an activity, a quality or an idea is called noun.
A noun can be used as the subject or object in a sentence.
Examples
Ahmad arrives tomorrow.
I love Hina.
I recommend this book.
Use your common sense.
Honesty is like everywhere.
These underlined words are nouns and must appear as subject or object in a sentence.
Kinds of noun:
There are five basic kinds of noun that are:
1) Proper Noun
The name of particular persons, a place, or things is known as proper noun.
Examples
Ahmad goes to school.
Lahore is a city of Pakistan.
I like math books.
We can identify proper noun in a sentence by word’s most first letter in in capital form.
2) Common Noun
The name of a common persons, place, or thing is known as common noun.
Examples
I am a boy.
This book is mine.
I go to school.
Book, boy and school are not specified so these are common noun.
3) Collective Noun
A collective noun describes a group or collection of similar individuals considered as a
complete whole.
Example
A class of student.
There are many sheep in a flock.
A board of directors run the organization.
These are collective noun but main thing is that mostly the combination of collective
noun consist of common noun like boy and girl are common noun in a class; is a
collective noun.
4) Material Noun
A material noun describes the matter or substance of which things are made.
Examples
This chair is made of wood.
Air is a combination of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
I like mutton Pulao.
5) Abstract Noun
Abstract noun is the name of some quality, state, action or an idea. We do not considered
the object whose quality or state described. Quality are: cleverness, height and color.
State are pleasure, poverty and youth. Actions are: movement, laughter, flight etc.
All above described noun are that which we can touch it just abstract noun are that noun
which we cannot touch but feel.
Examples
People lost faith in bank.
She will defeat them.
They laughed at my idea.
6) Compound Noun
A noun made up of two or more words used together as a single noun. These words are
may be Noun + noun or Noun + Adjective. Each compound noun is act as a single unit.
One word is Policeman, as two words is Dining-table and as two separate word is Fish
tank.
Examples
I go to school with my classmate.
We try to build our self-confidence.
He goes to swimming pool.
7) Concrete Noun
Nouns that you can physically see and touch. This is generally easy to understand. These
are in tangible form.
Examples
Ali and Salaam ordered a large pizza.
Teacher is writing with board marker.
Ice-cream was made from milk.
8) Countable Noun
Nouns that can be counted by individuals. these nouns have a plural form like “a” , “an” a
number before them.
Examples
I have an apple.
There are five children in a park.
My friend has four dogs.
9) Uncountable Noun
Noun that cannot be counted by individuals. These nouns have no plural form like not
used of “a” , “an” or “a number”.
Examples
There were lots of jobs.
I have many things to do.
I feel much worse now.
