team which passionately believed and bet on the growth of the IT industry.
That vision in 1976, born out of a Delhi "barsaati" (akin to a garage start up),

1
has resulted 3 decades later in creating a US $ 5 Billion Global Enterprise.
HCL is today a leader in the IT industry, employing 56,000 professionals, has
a global presence in 19 countries spanning locations in the US, Europe, Japan,
ASEAN & the Pacific Rim and a pan India presence across 360 points

To say that HCL is a household name in India today is an understatement. In

31 years of existence, the company has developed and implemented solutions
for multiple market segments, across a range of technologies, covering
customers in India and overseas.

HCL dominates the IT space as a leader. 55,000 gifted professionals, a colossal

US $4.8 Billion turnover, an international presence in 18 countries, and most
importantly a deep-rooted commitment to innovate, makes it a true
Technology Giant.

The HCL Group is today considered to be an outfit that has the knowledge and
skills in almost every part of the world of information technology. Present in
every sphere of the IT world, HCL’s human resources have helped it advance
so far ahead in this field—in India as well as abroad—that today it has grown
in size and stature to become India’s top IT company, with market leadership
in different areas of operations. The group is also considered as the first Indian
transnational IT company.
An immense knowledge base and technology leadership are the keys to HCL’s
ability to provide total IT solutions.
HCL started operations primarily as a hardware company when IT in India was
in a nascent stage. There were few Indian vendors then and HCL had the
advantage of positioning itself as the local hardware vendor. This meant that
the user was comfortable dealing with a local company, thus the comfort level
of users increased manifold while dealing with HCL. HCL understood the
market well, whereas MNC vendors were not so comfortable doing business in
Indian conditions and did not understand the psyche of the Indian user. Thus,

1
HCL was able to expand channels at a much faster rate and increased
penetration.
Due to inherent knowledge about India, HCL was able to penetrate deep into
the government sector and tap most of the IT spending coming from various
government departments. HCL was flexible enough in pricing, its sales model
and terms and conditions, which added to the comfort of its clients. Sales
teams at HCL have always been highly objective-driven and focused on
numbers. Every month/quarter they measure the performance of our managers
by the number of times they have met the customers face-to-face.
Whether it’s software, hardware, training, networking, telecom, peripherals or
system integration, HCL has an answer for all your IT needs—thanks to its
pool of competencies. The company also has skills in the areas of hardware,
and services extend from product designing to prototyping, manufacturing and
support. Specialization in designing custom-made solutions for companies
includes application development for client/server environments, legacy
system maintenance and re-engineering, migration, systems redevelopment,
onsite and offshore software services, and facilities management.
Computer-based education using advanced learning methodology has training
on offer for novices as well as professionals, in IT and non-IT areas. A
dedicated independent vendor channel for the entire Indian mass market helps
bring technology usage closer to the individual. The group specializes in
consumer-oriented, globally applicable solutions for end-users in
manufacturing banking and financial services, and the telecom segment
,beside being a total solution provider for technology-based communication
services through satellite communication, radio communication,
local area networks as well as broad band communication. HCL has played a
major role in creating IT awareness in the country and in creating a very
competitive environment for growth of the IT industry. The biggest
contribution of HCL in developing the Indian IT market is in terms of
introducing newer technologies and creating a market for them through
education and creation of awareness.

1
All of HCL’s expertise is centered around anticipating and fulfilling the needs
of the individual in all spheres of his life. The group achieves this by providing
a complete array of IT solutions that make life simpler and better. The
company has been leveraging its core competencies to develop new
technologies and solutions that pre-empt changing consumer needs. To
complement its strengths in global state-of-the-art technology, HCL, in the
past, has had joint ventures with international corporations such as Hewlett-
Packard, Perot Systems, Deluxe Corporation, James Martin & Co., and
General Instrument, and also partners with world leaders like AT&T and
Microsoft. And finally, forming the core strength of HCL is the talent and
innovativeness of its people, which enables it to provide the right solutions at
the right time.
HCL has always been proactive in understanding the market well. Thus, it
always anticipates the market demand well in advance and offers
products/services accordingly

By being locally incorporated in each country, HCL is able to serve customers
as a local business, with all attendant benefits. It is also a tax-paying citizen,
conforming to all local laws–and with a significant global workforce. We
believe that every part of the world has different ways of doing business and,
therefore, unless we make the investment of becoming a local player, the move

DEFINING THE INDUSTRY
Defining an industry depend upon intensity of competition at that time.
Firstly, it might build up its land acquisition and sales department so as to
compete in private speculative.
Secondly, it might recruit more marketing managers to work efficiently.

enterprise must decide how to “position” itself so as to achieve sustainable
competitive advantage

This matrix permits to choose a marketing stance within one of the four boxes
which are made available within the two dimensions of the competitive
advantage and competitive scope.
COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
A lower cost strategy is based on the pursuit of cost leadership n a given
industry through exploitation of lower input costs , greater efficiency and that

demand for informational technology

Competitive scope
According to Porter extends the positioning concept in to the second
dimension by adding further variable which he describes as competitive scope.
An example of the choice of competitive scope in information technology is
the decision whether to take full responsibility for projects as marketer in
either case there will be further choice between pursuing competitive
advantage through lower cost or differentiation

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research was design in such a way that all the probable customers and the
potential buyers can be covered during the research so as to get the accurate
information and feedback from the respondents.

The research was divided in the following phrases:-

1) The respondents were segmented.

1
2) The target customer was identified and approached.
3) Questionnaires were filled by the respondents.
4) Information analyzed and decoded.
5) Conclusion Drawn

For the research I used the exploratory research.

Exploratory research is a initial research conducted to clarify and define the

nature of the problem. Exploratory research provides insights into and
comprehension of an issue or situation. It should draw definitive conclusions
only with extreme caution. Exploratory research is a type of Research
conducted because a problem has not been clearly defined. Exploratory
research helps determine the best research design, data collection method and
selection of subjects. Given its fundamental nature, exploratory research often
concludes that a perceived problem does not actually exist.
Exploratory research is a useful preliminary step that helps ensure that a more
rigorous, more conclusive.

Sampling Design
For collection of samples out of whole universe, I have selected judgmental
sampling and simple random sampling. Now I would like to define what is
judgment or purposive sampling.
Judgment/purposive sampling
It is a no probability sampling technique in which an experienced individual
selects the sample based upon some appropriate characteristic of the sample
members, during the canopy setup I used this type of sampling.
I have mentioned this type of sampling because, I have to collect information
from the person having same characteristics like:-
• A person should below 25 years.

• Looks like a student.

Simple random sampling

It is a type of sampling in which each element of population has equal chance

of getting selected. During door-to door and data collection I used this type of
sampling.

Sources of data
The data inputs mainly taken from one-to-one interaction , door-to-door,
canopy, through HCL professionals and through secondary sources like
internet etc.

1
Primary source of data
The primary data that I collected was the first hand information which I
received through:-
• Questionnaire.

• Canopy setup.

• Door to door activity

• Data collection.

• Seminars

This primary collection of data take place by the help of simple random
sampling and through judgment sampling.

Secondary collection of data

Secondary data involved in my research is the information that is collect
through various sites on internet, from marketing executives, through centre
head, reference books, insert, prospectus, leaflets and through my pals.

Data collection methods and tools

Data for my research collected through various methods & tools like:-
Primary data

• Questionnaire through personal interaction.

• Door-to-door activity.

• Canopy setup.

• Calling.

• Personal approach.

Seminars

Secondary data

• Through internet and HCL official websites.

1
• Books and Literature

• Brochures, pamphlets, inserts etc.

• Through database proving agencies.

Data Collection Procedure

The data collection procedure used was semi-structured questionnaire method.

A thorough research was also undertaken to gather information. The analysis
of the data collected was done on a piece-by-piece basis with help from the
guides.
Data Analysis Method and Interpretation

Data was processed under SPSS Software. About 113 samples were collected
and analyzed through it. Frequencies, Cross tabulation and inter comparison
was done to interpret the data.

These questionnaire showing that there is very less awareness is there
about the HCL CDC, on which we are working.

Constraints Faced

1
During the period of the training I have gone through with many
constraints such as:
• Municipal bodies are not allowing in setting up our canopy as
per the required location.

• To convince the students of under-graduation and 12th pass out

which was quite impossible to attract because 12th student was waiting
for result and undergraduates are not willing to join two courses at a
time..

• We hardly able to found single person in between 1 to 5 p.m.

• People are not giving their correct information, because they

have fear that after giving their information the HCL CDC calling
person make frequent calls on their phone number.

• My other team member was not so energetic, they are not

concerned for their training due to which I faced so many problems.

• Sometimes respondents do not give a response or give partial

response. It is called non response error. The reason may be lack of
knowledge or unwillingness to answer.

Overall Experience

I have been under the marketing executive of HCL CDC, and performing the
same tasks which has to perform by all the fresher recruited person have to
perform in HCL CDC.
I was under the marketing department of HCL CDC, here my job was to create
awareness and increase walk-ins for the centre by the help of various tools of
marketing, major work which I have to perform was:-
• Collection of data.

• Calling to the data collected.

• Canopy setup.

• Door-to-door activity.

• House calls.

• Seminars.

If the centre located in a market area, then it would be very easy to collect
database as well as walk-ins to the centre.

1
My work can be in better manner if they provide me a feasible opportunity to
earn some handsome incentive.

Apart from that so many other related aspects of marketing, without whom no
business can’t survive for a long period of time.

I have learned various aspects of organization and marketing like:-

• Likewise food, clothing, shelter is the basic need of a man, as

same as regular growth and brand awareness is the basic need of an
organization to achieve growth in market over a long period of time.

• Customers perception and thinking are different from each

other, so we have to sell and convince them according to the individual
need.

• Team work plays a crucial role in an organization.

• Company just want result otherwise you are fired.

• How to handle pressure.

• Action without planning and strategy always goes against

you.

• Promotional activities plays a vital role in organization.

• We can’t recognize our customer easily, they can be in any

face or appearance.

• In marketing we always have to be innovative and active.

The overall learning and experience will surely help me in my future as I will
be aware of certain things of organizational behavior, marketing management,
customer relationship etc.
By the help of this training I will not be new for any organization, as I can
easily cope up with internal as well as external environment of the company.
This training gives me the taste of corporate sector that how we can survive in
this competitive environment which is necessary to understand.
