WEEK 2 FORM 1 MATH DAY 1 TEXT
The Order of Operations
If you are asked to simplify something like
"4 + 2×3",
the question that naturally arises is
"Which way do I do this?
Because there are two options!"
I could add first:
4 + 2×3
=6×3
= 18
...or I could multiply first:
4 + 2×3
=4+6
= 10
Which answer is the right one?
It appears the answer depends on which way you look at the problem.
But Math will not work if you cannot be sure of the answer.
Mathematicians have come up with different rules
that can be used to guide the order of operations.
Some examples are:
BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS, PEDMAS.
There may be a few more
but what do they mean?

WEEK 2 FORM 1 MATH DAY 1 TEXT
What are BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS?
BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS
are Acronyms
for remembering the Order of Operations in mathematics.
BODMAS stands for
B Brackets,
O Orders/Over/Of ,
D Division,
M Multiplication,
A Addition
S Subtraction.
BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS
do the same thing but using different words.
What is an Acronym?
An acronym is a word made up of the initial letters of words in a phrase.
Acronyms can be pronounced as separate words.
Think of NASA and LOL.
They both are pronounced as if they were a word in their own right.
However, NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration
and LOL can stand for Laughing Out Loud.
In a similar way, the letters in
BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS
all stand for words.
BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS
are acronyms for remembering the order of operations in Mathematics.

WEEK 2 FORM 1 MATH DAY 1 TEXT
What do the letters in
BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS and PEDMAS stand for?
B Brackets B Brackets B Brackets P Parenthesis P Parenthesis
O Orders/Over/Of O Orders/Over/Of I Indices E Exponents E Exponents
D Division M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication D Division
M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication
A Addition A Addition A Addition A Addition A Addition
S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction
Note:
For this topic , Brackets and Parenthesis refer to the same thing e.g. ( ) or [ ]
Note :
Orders , Indices and Exponents all refer to situations
where a number is raised to a power.
e.g. in 32 , 3 is raised to the power of 2
32 means 3x3 =9
e.g. in 24 , 2 is raised to the power of 4
24 means 2x2x2x2 =16
Note:
Over/Of does not refer to any specific operation in Mathematics.
Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction all have the usual meaning.
Now that we know what the letters stand for
How do we use these rules?
Do we have to use all the rules?
Which rule is best?

How to Use BODMAS, BOMDAS, BIDMAS, PEMDAS or PEDMAS ?
B Brackets B Brackets B Brackets P Parenthesis P Parenthesis
O Orders/Over/Of O Orders/Over/Of I Indices E Exponents E Exponents
D Division M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication D Division
M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication D Division M Multiplication
A Addition A Addition A Addition A Addition A Addition
S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction S Subtraction
These rules are meant to be used as a guide and they all can be used similarly.
Does the question have Brackets or Parenthesis? Work these out first.
Next comes any Orders, Indices or Exponents.
(Any Square Roots can also be worked out here)
Then we work out any Multiplication and then Division or
we can actually do Division and then Multiplication if we want.
Finally Deal with any Addition and Subtraction or
it actually does not matter if you Subtract first then Add.
Just remember these Acronyms are meant to be a Guide.
Maybe you can come up with your own Acronyms.
So for our first example :
"4 + 2×3",
We are guided to do multiplication before we add.
I could multiply first:
I could add first:
4 + 2×3
4 + 2×3
=4+6
=6×3
= 10
= 18 WRONG
CORRECT

Example:
Example: Calculate: 6×3+4×(9÷3)–8
Calculate: 9 × 2 – 10 ÷ 5 + 1 =
Solution: Solution:
9 × 2 – 10 ÷ 5 + 1 multiplication 6 × 3 + 4 × ( 9 ÷ 3 ) – 8 work out Brackets
= 18 – 10 ÷ 5 + 1 division
= 18 – 2 + 1 subtraction 6×3+4×3 –8 Multiplication
= 16 + 1 addition 18 + 4 × 3 – 8 Multiplication
= 17✔ 18 + 12 – 8 Addition
30 – 8 Subtraction
= 22 ✔
