ART APPRECIATION
Art Appreciation is an art survey course designed to increase knowledge and
appreciation of the visual arts. Students focus on interpreting and evaluating works of
art within formal, cultural, and historical contexts, as well as exploring a survey view of
art history from prehistoric to contemporary, including a deeper look at global artworks.
Students will also participate in a variety of art applications to experience and better
understand the process of creating art.
This course includes a broad series of lessons and activities that offer a variety of
modalities for ultimate student engagement and content retention. Each unit contains a
series of lessons that include introduction of content, virtual demonstration of that
content, and repeated opportunity to practice that content, along with a quiz per lesson,
exam per unit, and final exam at the end of the course.

Module 1: Introduction to Art Appreciation
Explore the concept of art
Learn about the major theories of art aesthetics and how to apply the to an
artwork
Learn the steps in formal art criticism and will apply these steps to various
artworks
Module 2: Elements of Art
Learn about the Elements of Art including: line, shape, form, value, kcolor, space,
and texture
Evaluate the elements in a variety of artworks to increase fluency in artistic
perception
Create basic representations of the elements to develop confidence in creative
expression
Module 3: Principles of Design
Learn about the Principles of Design including: balance, rhythm, movement,
contrast, emphasis, and unity
Evaluate the principles in a variety of artworks to increase their fluency in Artistic
Perception
Create basic representations of the elements to develop confidence in creative
expression
Module 4: Art Making
Learn about the art making techniques of drawing, painting, sculpture,
printmaking, and photography
Learn the materials used and the techniques artists most often utilize in their
artmaking
Develop an understanding of the materials and methods of creative expression
Module 5: Art History Early Civilizations
Learn about art from the earliest known civilizations including rock/wall art,
sculpture, and architecture
Explore a selection of artworks and architecture from Ancient Egypt, Ancient
Greece, and Rome
Examine each culture’s background and context for a holistic understanding of
the historical and cultural context of the selected pieces

Module 6: Early Christian to Gothic
Learn about the artworks and architecture from the Early Christian Era,
Byzantine Era, and from Islamic cultures
Learn about the specific architectural changes that developed during the
Romanesque period
Evaluate images of sacred spaces or floor plans, to make a determination as to
the religion or time period the structure belongs to using the terminology learned
in the module
Module 7: Renaissance to Rococo
Examine the art of the Proto-Renaissance, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque,
and Rococo eras, including major socio-political changes, artmaking differences,
stylistic differences, and accompanying works
Learn about shifts in medium (introduction of oil paints) and techniques
(chiaroscuro and tenebrism) as part of their process of understanding the
historical and cultural context of art
Module 8: Early Modernism
Trace the changes in art through the following eras: Enlightenment,
Neoclassical, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism,
Symbolism, Expressionism, Cubism
Describe the style of each era, the links to socio-political changes that influenced
the era, and to describe representative artists and artworks from these eras
Module 9: Modernism
Explore the work of Modernists, Dadaists, Abstract artists, Pop Art, Superrealists,
and Contemporary Art
Develop art vocabulary to include terms such as chromatic abstraction,
installation art, conceptual art, and more
Module 10: Exploring World Art
Evaluate artworks from Africa and Asia, including wall paintings, power figures,
relic guards, and masks
Examine Asian artworks, including Buddhist and Hindu art such as architecture,
sculpture, landscapes, ink paintings, and printmaking
Module11: Careers in Art
Learn about a variety of careers in the field of art including working artists,
graphic artists, art educators, fashion design, and museum curators, among
others
