CE763A: Solid And Hazardous Waste management
Sumit Kumar 16907717 Assignment#1
a) Mention the city/place where you are currently residing. Provide a quantitative inventory of
annual household waste (MSW) in your house in a tabular form showing monthly variation.
Extrapolate it to about 50 houses in your neighborhood/colony. Compare the per capita per day
MSW in both cases. How is it different from the Indian national average? Contrast and
comment.

Total Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Generation in a year = 625.2 Kg [My house]
Number of members in my house = 6 persons
Total Municipal Solid Waste Generation in a year = 31260 Kg [in 50 houses i.e., colony]
Average Number of persons in each house = 5 persons
Total persons in 50 houses = 250 persons
.
MSW in my house = =285 g/capita/day
∗
MSW in colony = = 343 g/capita/day
∗
Indian nation average MSW generation = 450 g/capita/day
In my colony, MSW generation is less than the Indian national average waste generation. My colony is in
urban area. But MSW generation is less. It may be due to following reasons:
1) Fresh food is available. Packed food is used very less.
2) People uses cotton bags as clothes are manufactured here. But 80% people have moved to use
plastic bags.
b) Provide a list of items/objects you have used in your lifetime which are a result of Recycle,
material Recovery, and Reuse (3R)?
Materials Category
Plastic cans Reuse
Plastic bottles Reuse
Mobiles Recovery
Laptop Recovery
Clothes Reuse and recycle
Glass Jar Recycle and reuse
Pen Reuse
Pencil Recycle
Copies and books Recycle and reuse
Thermostat bottle Reuse and recycle
Bucket, mug Reuse
Utensil Reuse and recycle
Desk Reuse
Toys Recycle
Bat Recycle
Cotton bags Recycle, reuse
Newspaper Recycle
Color box Reuse and recycle
c) Based on your answer to the first question, you are given the task to make sure that 50% of your
current annual household MSW must be recycled. Provide a detailed strategy to obtain this
objective. Provide it in tabular form matching format with your answer provided for the first
question. How are you going to convince those 50 households that they should follow your
proposed strategy?
Materials Annual waste Recycle % of MSW
(Kg)
Paper and cardboard 58 Yes 9.28
Glass 4.7 Yes 0.75
Plastics 9.3 No 1.49
Textile 17.7 Yes 2.83
Uncooked food waste 199.5 Yes 31.91
Cooked food waste 36.5 Yes 5.84
Ferrous metals 19.5 Yes 3.12
Non-ferrous metals 3 Yes 0.48
Fines (dust, etc.) 214 No 34.23
Miscellaneous 63 No 10.07
Total in Kg 625.2 100
Recyclable MSW = 9.28 + 0.75 + 2.83 + 31.91 + 5.84 + 3.12 + 0.48 = 54.21 %
Following are the strategy for recycling the waste:
1) Segregation at source for the recyclable items into compostable and non-compostable
Compostable items: cooked and uncooked food waste = 37.75 %
Non-compostable items: paper, cardboard, textile, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals = 16.46 %
2) Collection drive
a) Compostable items are collected from the houses.
b) Non-compostable items are collected from the houses.
3) Transportation and Processing
a) Compostable items are transported to a composting site.
b) Non-compostable items are transported to a storage facility where further segregation can
be done. Then, the segregated items could be transported to the required facilities for the
recycling.
Household segregation strategies:
Every house will be given three dustbins: dry compostable waste bin, wet compostable waste
bin and non-compostable waste bin (should be recycled). Wet compostable waste bins should
not be covered as it would lead to bad smell and fungus. Waste should be collected every day or
alternate day.
How to convince those 50 households?
Awareness regarding waste like
a) if it is not recycled, what would be the impact.
b) We are paying taxes that is included in items we buy. Few fractions of those taxes go for
waste management.
c) Providing seminars/workshop on waste management in lame language
Motivation
Incentives
Providing incentives if the follow the strategy.
