Symptom
An installation of e.g. SAP GUI 7.50 ends with many errors on Windows 10 build 1709. In the log file
NwSapSetup.log there are errors of the type:
Error installing file. Error message: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. Error
code 0x0000007b (123).
Other Terms
System32, SysWOW64
Reason and Prerequisites
Starting with Windows 10 build 1709 the origin of files is stored and assessed by Windows. In some cases
files downloaded from service.sap.com have been marked with ZoneId=3 which means Windows has
classified the file(s) as downloaded from the internet and potentially dangerous. Files with that classification
cannot be copied to Windows system folders.
Solution
In order to fix this issue please perform these steps:
1.) Log on to the machine that hosts the source of the SAP GUI installation or the installation of the
problematic product.
2.) Open a PowerShell and navigate to the folder that contains the installation source files.
3.) Run the following command: Get-ChildItem -Recurse | Unblock-File
4.) Check whether installations on the formerly problematic client machines can now be carried out es
expected.
