Shear failure at the column – corbel interface


In case the column and corbel is cast at different times,
the vertical shear at the interface is resisted by the horizontal steel
Avf = Vu / Ø fy (μ sin α + cos α)
Ø = strength reduction factor Ø 0.85
α = angle of inclination of reinforcement α 90 degrees
μ = coefficient of friction for monolithic construction μ 1.4
Avf = 300 / 0.85 × 500 × (1.4 × sin(90) + cos(90)) Avf 879 mm²

Flexural reinforcement
Af = Mu / Ø fy (0.85 d) = 153 / 0.85×500 × 0.85×550 Af 771 mm²

Primary reinforcement
As > 2/3 Avf + An = 2/3 × 879 + 142 As1 728 mm²
