OUTSIDERS Figurative Language Worksheet
Background: This novel includes many idioms—expressions that have meanings different from
what their words normally suggest. Literal would be a “word for word” explanation of an
expression. Figurative language is not word for word—but instead uses figures of speech
(hyperbole, simile or metaphor—for example) to give a symbolic expression or meaning to a
phrase.
Directions: Below, use complete sentences to explain the quoted expression both in terms of its
literal meaning and its figurative meaning/explanation. The first one has been done for you. Of
course grammar, spelling and punctuation count. Use a separate lined paper and write neatly if
needed. Please, do not write sloppily or down the sides of the paper as your work will not be
accepted. Thank you.
