SEO Strategies for Marketing Campaigns

It argues that addressing such issues openly and respectfully while valuing different opinions can help create collaborative work environments and better decision making, rather than allowing unresolved conflicts to persist. However, controversial topics also need to be discussed carefully to avoid making employees uncomfortable.

Q3: Discuss and argue some controversial work-related topics?

Discussing controversial topics in the workplace tends to make people uncomfortable.
However, without confronting stereotypes, personal biases and misconceptions, you allow
unresolved conflict to fester and persist. Dealing with controversial issues in a constructive
manner enables you to create a collaborative team environment. As people develop open
interpersonal relationships, they exchange different ideas and opinions that typically lead to
better decision-making. Whether your employees discuss work, politics, religion, scandals or
international events, an effective team debates controversial issues with respect, without
harassment and with the intent to support each other.

Parental leave:
Parental leave, or family leave, is an employee benefit available in almost all countries. The
term "parental leave" may include maternity, paternity, and adoption leave; or may be used
distinctively from "maternity leave" and "paternity leave" to describe separate family leave
available to either parent to care for small children. In some countries and jurisdictions,
"family leave" also includes leave provided to care for ill family members. Often, the
minimum benefits and eligibility requirements are stipulated by law.
Unpaid parental or family leave is provided when an employer is required to hold an
employee's job while that employee is taking leave. Paid parental or family leave provides
paid time off work to care for or make arrangements for the welfare of a child or dependent
family member. The three most common models of funding are government-mandated social
insurance/social security (where employees, employers, or taxpayers in general contribute to
a specific public fund), employer liability (where the employer must pay the employee for the
length of leave), and mixed policies that combine both social security and employer liability.

The Controversy Over Affirmative Action:

Although some affirmative action policies reduce barriers only when sourcing and promoting
candidates, others tend to actively favour applicants based on race, gender, nationality or
another protected characteristic. It is this latter group of measures that have met with the
greatest resistance.
One of the most significant criticisms is that certain programs will compel the organization to
overlook highly qualified candidates, and instead, focusing on those who are not as capable,
simply to meet the standards of affirmative action. There is a risk that these types of policies
will create greater condescension for the beneficiaries of the affirmative action, because these
people are often accused of getting ahead because of their gender or ethnicity, instead of
qualifications and achievements. This type of stigma is difficult to overcome.
In every workplace, affirmative action has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one
hand, affirmative action can open the door to having a diverse, balanced workplace. On the
other hand, affirmative action can create an atmosphere of resentment and suspicion. Just as
with every other approach, you need to be careful of how you implement affirmative action
so that you can achieve the greatest effect.

Office Romances:
The line between where employees’ personal lives end and the corporate interests begin is a
bit blurry sometimes. You may think that who you date is none of your company’s business,
but you may be wrong. When your romantic life is at odds with company interests, your
employer will have a lot to say about it. If a break-up with a co-worker makes working
together impossible or dating a subordinate or supervisor results in favouritism, those become
issues that adversely affect the company interests. Be careful not to let office romances make
the quality or reliability of your work suffer. Better yet, check your company’s policies to be
clear on what constitutes a fire-able offense to stay on the safe side.

Social Media Savvy:

According to a 2012 report from Proskauer Rose, more companies are adopting policies
regarding their employees’ use of social media. That’s because what you post on Facebook or
tweet to your followers goes from being your personal business to your company’s business
when it adversely affects their image. Again, the line between what’s personal and what’s
business gets blurry. Refrain from posting anything on social media sites that divulge
company practices or strategy or that can negatively reflect your company’s image.

Favouritism & Nepotism:

While we’d all like to think it’s what we know -- more than who we know -- that helps our
careers advance, that’s not always the case. Most companies don’t tout that favoritism or
nepotism is a part of their practices, for fear of gaining a reputation for being less-than-fair.
But that doesn’t mean the two issues don’t exist. While you should always be prepared to
navigate office politics when it comes to moving up the corporate ladder, watch for and
identify favouritism and nepotism in your workplace.

Discrimination:
It may seem like discrimination based on issues of age, gender, race, political or religious
affiliation and sexual orientation are things of the past, but they are, unfortunately, still alive
and well in today’s workplace. While we’ve come a long way in terms of equal rights, when
these forms of discrimination rear their heads, they are almost always subtle so those
practicing them are less likely to be thought poorly of or punished. Fortunately, there are laws
in most places protecting people from discrimination. Consult with your Human Resources
department or the authorities if you find these issues at your workplace.

How to deal with controversial issues?

Addressing Controversy:
To develop an effective workforce, you need provide a mechanism for employees to report
issues that make them feel unsafe or threatened physically or emotionally. Typically, a
human resource professional performs this role by responding to email, phone calls or
personal complaints. Your small business should be prepared to handle controversial
situations by establishing policies and procedures to provide governance in the workplace.
An official code of conduct helps people maintain ethical behavior. Verifying allegations
requires an official investigation, non-defensive communication and effective conflict-
resolution techniques. People should be rewarded for taking a stand and supporting their
position while respecting others.

Maintaining Diversity:
Creating a culture in which employees feel safe and valued benefits a small business as well.
Workplace controversies, such as misunderstanding traditions, misinterpreting comments or
mistaking gestures, disrupt workflow. By offering training programs that teach people to
value differences, you can prepare to deal with controversial workplace issues that people
feel strongly about, such as dealing with differences in terms of gender, age, sexuality and
race. To prevent a crisis, analyse your workforce to identify the hot buttons and take steps in
advance of a potential issue.

Employee Concerns:
Employer policies and procedures, particularly when they change without warning, may
cause employees to worry about their job security, career development, salary benefits and
privacy. Everyone wants to be treated fairly. Employers need to balance the needs of the
business and the safety of all employees. The use of technology, including video, telephone
and Internet usage surveillance, may concern some employees. As social media technology
evolves and the workday extends longer hours, the line between personal time and work time
becomes blurred. Managing these potential workplace issues effectively relies on clear and
consistent communication between workers and managers.

Maintaining Equity:
When the workplace becomes mired in controversial issues, employees may spend more time
arguing with each other, supervisors and company executives. Adhering to local, state and
federal regulations for hiring, assignment and termination decisions helps ensure that your
small business operates in a standard manner. This can reduce some of the friction and
disappointment. The Small Business Administration website provides to help you handle a
range of controversial issues, including benefits, discrimination and harassment.
Q4: Create a plan to expand the business develop a new product line,
expand into a new line of business, take the business into a new
international market.
