On the given literary art (Bishop Hatto) supply the essential ingredients of literature.
A. Subject
The subject of the poem is the heinous crime of Bishop Hatto who, in a time of
famine, cynically gathered a crowd of women and children in a barn to which he
set fire.
B. Setting
The Barn, the Palace and the tower on the Rhine of Bishop Hatto, Winter time.
C. Characters (briefly describe)
Bishop Hatto – the bishop who gathered all the poor in a barn and gave them food
but set everyone in the barn on fire.
The Neighborhood – the poor women, children, young and old who were starving
and gathered around the Bishop’s door.
D. Plot (3 c’s)
Conflict – the conflict in the poem is Man vs Nature. After the Bishop committed
his heinous crime, thousands of rats are attacking his palace, his corn and there
were still more coming to him even when he moved to what he called the safest
place.
Climax – the climax in the poem was when the Army of Rats attacked the Bishop
in his tower on the Rhine, who swum the deep river and climbed the steep shore,
and the Bishop fell on his knees.
Conclusion – the rats who were sent did the judgement on Bishop Hatto.
E. Generalization
The main idea in the poem is the judgement one will have to face because of his
wrong doings and crimes he committed.
F. Theme
“There is no immunity from the consequences of sin; punishment is swift and sure
to one and all.” – Hosea Ballou
The moment a person – whoever you are and whatever position you have in the
society, commits a heinous crime, God will give His judgement in His own ways.
G. Form
It is in the form of poetry – narrative as it is written in lines and verses and it talks
about a story of Bishop Hatto and his fate with the rats.
H. Point of View (Explain)
It is in a third person point of view which means that the narrator narrates the
actions, behaviors and feelings of the characters to the readers.
