DIFFUSION
DUE DATE : 09 MARCH 2021
1. Doping of Silicon by Indium is required in a process so that the concentration of Indium at a depth
3μm from the surface is half of that at the surface. What is the required diffusion time? The diffusion
coefficient of Indium in Silicon is D = 8x10 −12cm2/sec. [5]
2. A steel specimen has been carburized at 930 oC for 10 hours. The carburization depth reached 400μm.
What is the required carburization time at the same temperature in order to double the carburization
depth? [10]
3. Consider a steel specimen with 2mm thickness, containing 0.005wt%carbon. The specimen is
subjected to carburization by placing it in a box containing graphite powder. The box is then heated to
900oC. Under these conditions the surface concentration of carbon becomes 0.8wt% and remains
constant throughout the carburization process.
a. Determine the carbon concentration profile c(x) for diffusion times of 5, 50 and 500 s. [15]
b. We aim at a carbon concentration of 0.4wt% at 20μmdepth from the surface. For which diffusion
time, 5, 50 or 500s is this target achieved? [10]
c. Assume that carburization is performed at a higher temperature, 1000 oC. Compare the concentration
profiles for t = 5s between 900 and 1000 oC. [10]
d. Check if the requirement for 0.4wt% carbon at 20μm depth is satisfied for diffusion time t = 50s at
1000oC. [10]
e. Calculate the diffusion time to achieve 0.4wt% carbon at 20m depth at 900 and 1000 oC. [10]
f. Calculate the depth at which the carbon concentration reaches 0.5wt% at t =500s at 900 and 1000 oC.
The diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite are D=1.14x10 −12m2/sec at 900oC and
D=1.14x10−11m2/sec at 1000oC. [10]
4. A steel work piece with 0.7% carbon is austenized at 900oC. Determine the maximum time for the
austenization process in order for the carbon content not to drop below 0.6% at depth of 0.1mm below
the surface at 0.4% carbon of the atmosphere. Temperature dependence of the diffusion coeffient of
the carbon in austenite can be expressed as :
Dc=0.25× exp ( −144RT900 ) cm . s
2 −1
[10]
5. For a steel work piece with 1.0% of chrome, variations result from the dendritic segregation between
0.6 and 1.4% Cr. Determine the homogenization time for the chrome content to vary between 0.8 and
1.2% if the work piece is to be annealed at 1200 oC. The diffusion coefficient of chromium at 1200 oC is 7.2
x 10-11 cm2.s-1 [10]
