What is torque?
Torque, moment or moment of force, is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about
an axis (Wikipedia)
Torque = F x r
In rotating machinery, torque is directly related to the power:
If the load on a machine increases, and we want to maintain a certain operating speed,
the motor must deliver more power, and that is done by increasing the torque
Almost every machine problem will result in a change of the torque reading e.g. bearing
problems, wear, coupling defects, torsional vibration etc.
Torque measurements can be used as a “protection” system to prevent shaft breakage
overload monitoring

How is torque measured?
The right telemetry components are needed in order to transfer the torque readings from
the shaft to a monitoring system

Before offering a torque measurement system
Before start check for:
Specify diameter of the shaft. (There is a 1 meter long rotating antenna, for diameters of
max. 315mm and a 2 meter long antenna, for diameters of max. 630mm)
Accessibility to the shaft (best if you get a drawing and pictures of the machine). At lest
10cm are needed.
SDIC needs 1 day of installation for each measurement point.
Shaft and ambient temperature at measurement location. (Should be max. 60°C)
When commissioning the system, customer needs to make sure that a “test run” can be
performed in order to check if the system is running fine.
If you are not sure about something, always ask!

Types of torque measurements
Static torque measurement
(DC component)
• Like overall values in
vibration analysis
• Compare with rated
nominal torque
Dynamic torque measurement
(AC component)
• Measurement of the
torsional vibration
• A spectrum can also be
calculated
