Statistics (SAL MPSY-402), Sem-1

MM: 100

Q1 Following is a sample of age data for individuals working at home.

18, 54, 20, 46, 25, 48, 53, 27, 26, 37, 40, 36, 42, 25, 27, 33, 28, 40, 45, 25

a) Compute mean

b) The median age of population of all adults is 35.5 years. Use the median age of the above data
to comment on whether the at home workers tend to be younger or older than the population of
all adults.

c) Compute first and third quartile.

d) Compute the 32nd, 75th percentile.

Q2 1,000 Students at college are graded according to their I.Q and their economic conditions.
Use chi sq test of independence on the data to find whether there is any association between the
economic conditions and level of I.Q

Economic
conditions I.Q
  High Medium Low
Rich 160 300 140
Poor 140 100 160

Q3 Following is a data of starting salary (in $) of 12 business school graduates.

2850, 2950, 3050, 2880, 2755, 2710, 2890, 3130, 2940, 3325, 2920, 2880

Find a) mean b) median c) inter quartile range d) co-efficient of variation

Q4 Entry to a certain University is determined by a national test. The scores on this test are
normally distributed with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 100. Alfred wants to be
admitted to this university and he knows that he must score better than at least 70% of the
students who took the test. Alfred takes the test and scores 585. Will he be admitted to this
university?

Q5 The number of defects per unit in a sample of 330 units of a manufactured product is found
as follows:
No. of
No. of defects units(O)

2 20
3 3
4 1
Fit a Poisson distribution to the data and test for goodness of fit
