The framework of de-development proposes that rich countries lower their levels of development and consumption to more sustainable levels, rather than pressuring poorer countries to continuously develop and catch up. It involves shifting priorities from economic growth to well-being measures like life expectancy and happiness. Hickel believes terms like "de-growth" can give the wrong impression that de-development means failure or decline, when it actually aims to progress humanity in a balanced way. He explains that de-development for rich countries means consuming less and owning less, not giving things up, but finding purpose and living happily within environmental means.

1. What is the framework of de-development of rich countries all about?

The framework of the “de-development” of rich countries is all about

putting an end to the idea of pushing the poorer countries to catch up with the
rich ones, but instead we should be thinking of ways to get the richer
countries to catch down to more appropriate levels of development. However,
it might be tricky but not totally impossible. In addition, the “de-developing
framework” of rich countries also illustrates the shifting concept of the
development from economic growth into life expectancy and happiness which
has been proven true and reliable by certain researches.

2. How is the de-development framework different from traditional

frameworks of development?

The “de-development” framework greatly differs from traditional

frameworks of development in terms of their concept and ideas. The
traditional framework is basically all about “growth” and explains that we need
more development in order to improve our living condition much better. On
the other hand, “de-development” framework suggested that the richer
countries must be the one to catch down to more appropriate levels of
development and have an efficient and happy living instead of focusing solely
on economic growth (traditional) which is deemed ineffective despite it being
the main objective of development for the past several years.

3. According to Hickel, how can rich countries de-develop?

According to Hickel, rich countries can “de-develop” through buying more

and owning less. Having a high GDP per capita doesn’t really equal being
happy. For example, the US has a higher GDP but Costa Rica has a better
happiness indicator. Moreover, rich countries can adapt to this idea by mainly
changing their perspective and lifestyle. They can reduce their consumption
everyday to conserve more resources that can be used in the near future
wherein currently there is a scarcity of resources. Hickel also added that
advertisement should be banned, to shorten working hours, and have a basic
income and in this process a society and the live of its people could improve

4. Why does Hickel frown upon pundits using terms such as de-growth, zero
growth, or de-development in describing an alternative framework?

Hickel frown upon the pundits using terms such as de-growth, zero
growth, or de-development in describing an alternative framework mainly
because he believes that their use of language gives someone who doesn't
know anything about it a misunderstanding of what de-development implies.
He needs people to understand that de-development does not mean failing,
withdrawing to learn, ending to expand or devolve, but rather that it is a step
forward in human progress and development.

5. Some people might think that de-development is about giving things up.
How does Hickel explain that this is not the case?

Some people might think that “de-development is about giving things up.
However, Hickel explains that this is not the case. For Hickel, “de-
development” is a step toward understanding and being aware of the reason
for our life and purpose. It is not about being miserable; the goal is to live a
happy and productive life. It is not preventing mankind from progressing, but
rather helping it to find balance and harmony and rise as a whole.
