Continuous Assessment Test I: February 2018 Reg. No.

This document provides information for a continuous assessment test on the design of steel structures. It includes three parts: Part A contains 10 short answer questions; Part B contains 5 long answer design problems worth 13 marks each; Part C contains 1 long answer problem worth 15 marks. The test covers topics like the use of lug angles, types of bolts, permissible stresses, tension splices, effective lengths, load carrying capacities and more. Students are asked to solve structural design problems for various steel members under axial loads or as connections, including the design of angles, plates, bolted and riveted joints, columns, and base plates.

Continuous Assessment Test I February 2018 Reg. No.

Programme : B.E. Date : 06/02/2018

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.20am to 12.20pm
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 6603 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 What is the use of providing lug angles?
2 What are all the various types of bolts?
3 What is the permissible stress in axial tension?
4 What is purpose of using tension splice?
5 Define chain bolting and riveting.
6 What is the effective length of compression member?
7 What is the purpose of gusset plate?
8 What is the use of providing column base?
9 What are the different ways by which a compression member buckles?
10 Define the load carrying capacity of columns.

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) A single unequal angle ISA 90 x 60 x 60mm is connected to a 10mm gusset
plate at the ends with 5 nos of 16mm bolts to transfer tension. Determine the
design tensile strength of the angle. i) If the gusset plate is connected to
90mm leg. ii) If the gusset is connected to 60mm leg. (13)
(or)
b) A tension member of a roof truss carries a factored axial tension of 430kN.
Design the section and its connection (a) Without using lug angle (b) Using
(13)
lug angle.

12 a) Determine the tensile strength of a roof truss diagonal 100 x 75 x 10mm (13)
connected to the gusset plate by 4 nos of 20mm diameter power driven rivets
in one row along the length of the member. The short leg of the angle is kept
outstanding.
(or)
b) Design a tension splice to connect two plates of size 350 x 20 mm and 300 x (13)
12 mm if the design load is 400 kN.

13 a) Design a double angle tension member connected on each side of a 10mm

thick gusset plate to carry an axial factored load of 300KN. Use 16mm black
(13)
1
bolts. Assume shop connection.
(or)
b) A steel column ISHB 400 @ 759.3 N/m is subjected to a factored axial load of
2000 kN. Design the slab base plate for the column and base plate are
(13)
machined and the concrete footing is M 20 grade.

14 a) Design a gusseted base for a column ISHB 350@710 N/m with two plates
450mm x 20mm carrying a factored load of 3600kN. The column is to be
(13)
supported on concrete pedestal to be built with M20 concrete.
(or)
b) Design a laced column with 2 channels back to back of length 12m to carry an
axial factored load of 1500kN. The column may be assumed to have restrained
(13)
in position but not in direction at both ends.

15 a) Design a battened column with 2 channels back to back of length 10m to carry
an axial factored load of 1400kN. The column may be assumed to have
(13)
restrained in position but not in direction at both ends.
(or)
b) Calculate the compressive resistance of a compound column consisting ISMB
500 with one cover plate 350 x 20 mm on each flange and having a length of 5
m. Assume that the bottom of column is fixed and top is rotation fixed,
translation free. Take fy = 250 N/mm2. (13)

PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16 a) A Column 4m long has to support a factored load of 6000kN. The column is

effectively held at both ends and restrained in direction at one of the ends.
(15)
Design the column using beam sections and plates.
(or)

b) Determine the design axial load capacity of the column ISHB 300 @ 577 N/m (15)
if the length of the column is 3m and its both ends pinned.
