Most Essential Learning Competencies
The learners should be able to infer how friction and gravity affect movements of different
objects. (S6FE-IIIa-c-1)
Expectations
This module is designed and written to help you master important concepts about friction.
Specifically, this module will enable you to:
❏ Investigate why an object moving along a surface slows down and eventually stops.
❏ Describe and define friction.
❏ Define and describe static friction.
❏ Describe and define kinetic friction.
Pretest

her to oppose the motion of running?
A. Speed B. Velocity C. Friction D. Time
2. Teacher Joshua will explain the meaning of friction to his grade six- class this afternoon.
What should he tell about friction?
A. It is a push and pull activity.
B. It is the distance travelled.
C. It is a force that pulls an object downward.
D. It is a force that resists motion between two bodies in contact with each other.

3. The pupils listed examples of static friction such as picture frame on the wall, plates on the
table, clothes inside the cabinet and shoes on the stairs. Why are the two objects considered
as having static friction?
A. They are in contact but are not moving.
B. They show motion.
C. They did NOT touch the surface.
D. They touched the surface while moving.
4.The following pictures illustrates kinetic friction. Which one does not?

A. walking man B. gifts C. running car D. moving boat
5. Study the situation.: You are going to answer your module. You picked up your pen and held
it with your hand. You slid the tip of the pen as you wrote the answers to the questions
asked. How is kinetic friction demonstrated in the situation? The pen _______________
A. is rested on the module. C. rolls on the module.
B. moves through the liquid. D. slides through the module.
Looking Back
Mother went walking to the market instead of riding tricycle. She walks 920 meters in
10 minutes. She decided to walk regularly not only to save money but to stay healthy and
strong.
Recall the concepts on speed and velocity. Read the situation carefully and answer the
following question
1.What data are given to be able to solve for the speed of mother?
A. distance B. time C. distance and time D. distance, time and direction
2. What is the speed of mother as she walks to the market?
A. 92 m/s B. 90 m/s C. 9 m/s D. 9200 m/s
2
3. What does velocity means if mother walks 92m/s to the market?
A. The duration of travel.
B. The length of space covered by a body.
C. The distance traveled over a certain period of time.
D. The distance traveled over a certain period of time toward a specific direction.
Brief Introduction
Aware or not, we are actually applying force- push and pull in different activities that we
do. We may not notice but there is a force that makes everything run smoothly. Any two objects
rub against each other cause FRICTION. With friction, an object that moves will eventually stop
moving as it contacts the surface.
For example, when you are holding a glass, friction is present in your hand as it contacts
with the glass surface, preventing it from falling. When you are standing, walking or dancing,
friction is in contact with your shoes and the floor, preventing you from slipping or sliding. The
plates and other utensils on our table remain at rest on the table because friction resists the
motion. Otherwise, everything and everyone will be in chaotic motion. Hence, friction in action is
indeed necessary!
Activity 1 Stop, Look and Investigate
What You Need: ping pong ball or any ball of the same size, blanket and timer
What to Do:
1. With a little force, roll the ball over the smooth floor at any part of your house near a wall. Use
the timer for you to tell the number of seconds as the ball reaches the wall. Write your
observation in the table below.
2. On the same spot, put a blanket and roll the ball again. Observe and write the number of
seconds it reaches the wall.

Answer the following:
1. What are the materials that you used in the activity? ________________________________
2. On what surface did the ball roll faster? __________________________________________
3. What can you say about the surface where the ball rolled faster? Is it smooth or rough?
__________________________________________________________________________
4. In what surface do you think the friction is higher or where there is more friction?
__________________________________________________________________________
5. How will you describe the surface where the ball rolled slower?
__________________________________________________________________________

Activity 2 DDM: Define and Describe Me
A. Look at the group of words below. Arrange the words correctly to form the definition of friction
Friction is ___________________
opposite
B. Check the circle opposite the correct description of friction.
Force that acts on two objects that are in contact with each other.
Force that Push or pull of objects that are in one surface.
It stops or slows the movement of objects that are touching each other.
Activity 3 Isn’t it STATIC?
John Patrick, is a Grade 6 pupil in an elementary
school. He just finished attending his online
“Kamustahan” with his Science teacher and
classmates. After eating merienda, his mother asked
his help in moving the wooden sofa to the other side of
the room. He gladly helped but at first push, he had
hard time moving the sofa. He tried it again pushing
and pulling, until eventually moved it to the other side
of the room.
After helping his mother successfully, JP was
thinking “Why didn’t I got to move the wooden sofa at
my first try?”
Static Friction is the of force will result with
friction on an object no movement. The force
that is not moving. If of friction is greater than
two objects slide each
the force applied.
other, a small amount
Answer the following question:
1. On which side of the room did JP’s mother ask him to move the sofa?
A. center B. Other side c. Left Side
2. What activities did JP do that describe force?
A. Push B. Pull C. Bothe A and B
3. When the sofa was being pushed by JP and yet it did not move on his first try, what kind of
friction was present?
A. Static B. Velocity C. Gravity
4. Why do you think John Patrick was not able to move the wooden sofa on his first try?
Explain in one - two sentences _________________________________________

Activity 4 Static at Rest
Below is a picture of a room with different objects. Examine the objects inside the room, then list
down an object and the place where they are rested. Number 1 is done for you.
1. table rested on the floor

Activity 5 Move it Kinetic!
Kinetic friction is defined as a skidding or sliding motion between two surfaces. It acts
between two objects in motion. Thus, when the object is moving to the right, friction moves to
the left.

Remember
Friction is force in opposite direction. It is a force that acts on two
objects that are in contact with each other.
Static Friction is a friction between two objects that is strong enough
which doesn’t allow them to move.
Kinetic Friction is also called a skidding or sliding motion between two
surfaces. The types of kinetic friction are sliding friction, fluid friction, air
friction, or rolling friction.
Types of Friction:
Sliding Friction- the force when two objects glide or rub against each
other.
Rolling Friction- the force between a roller or a wheel and the surface
which it is contact with.
Fluid Friction- is a friction between moving objects and a liquid.
Air Friction- is a friction between an object moving in the air and the air.
Posttest
Study the diagram on friction carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer and write it in
your answer sheet.
