Chapter - 3 Reactive Power and Voltage Control

1) Develop an expression to find the magnitude of reactive power requirement


for voltage control in log transmission lines.

2) Why reactive compensation is required. Explain different methods of reactive


compensation.

3) Define the surge impedance loading (SIL) of a transmission line.

4) For a transmission line connected between two buses, derive the expression of
voltage regulation and also establish from the phasor diagram and the
equations that the Q and V have a strong coupling.

5) Explain voltage collapse and state main factors that leads to voltage collapse.

6) Derive the expression for critical receiving end voltage and critical power
angle at voltage stability limit for a two bus Power system.

7) Enlist different types of reactive power compensation methods for (1) heavily
loaded, (2) on no load and also explain voltage stressed power systems.
Explain static VAR compensators in detail.

8) Define the voltage regulation. Derive expression for voltage regulation of a


transmission line and show its relation with reactive power.

1) What do you mean by state estimation? And how does it differ from load flow
solutions. Discuss External System Equivalency.
2) Explain static and dynamic state estimation of power system.

3) Explain least square approximation method for state estimation.

4) Explain Tracking State Estimation for Power system.

5) Describe Least Square Estimation (LSE) and Weighted LSE for estimation of x
(vector of n random variables) using another vector y of variables m (>n).

6) In relation to state estimation process, explain detection, identification and


suppression of bad data in the measurement vector.

7) Explain various applications of state estimations in a power system.

8) Develop step by step the mathematical model for a state estimator using line
power flows with the help of weighted least square method as suggested by
Dopazo et al.
9) What do you mean by “Bad Data” in power system? How does it creep in while
