DESIGN OF TRAINING (DOT)
Writing Skills
1. INTRODUCTION
There are some important skills students have to learn as they go from one stage to another in
their academics. These skills are taught in our schools—right from high school through to the
college years—to expose them to the different ways they can solve real-life problems
whenever they’re confronted with one.Among all these is writing, which is, undeniably, one
of the most important skills every student must perfect. Writing, as a skill itself, offers the
students the opportunity to simultaneously catch on to many other vital facilities that can help
them succeed in their academics, career, and also in other relevant aspects of their lives.
Learning writing has many advantages . It improves communication skills.Communication
(oral and non-verbal), is one essential skill every student must master to be able to succeed
not only in their academics but in life as a whole. It sharpens creativity and imagination. It
widens our knowledge base. As you continue to write and, of course, carry out research, you
also continue to widen your knowledge base and develop an excellent memory too.
Writing is vital to your academic success, in that it is identified as one of the most important
requirements a student must satisfy to be able to earn excellent grades and also a good
degree, at the end of it all.
2. NEED
Writing skills are an important part of communication. Good writing skills allow us to
communicate our message with clarity and ease to a far larger audience than through face-to-
face or telephone conversations. We might be called upon to write a report, plan or strategy at
work; write a grant application or press release within a volunteering role; or we may fancy
communicating our ideas online via a blog. Good writing skills allow us to communicate
our message with clarity and ease to a far larger audience than through face-to-face or
telephone conversations.
Further writing is a life skill, not only an essential job-related skill, because it is often the
basis upon which others judge your learning, your values, your ideas and your contribution to
society. Regardless of your career or occupation, everyone has to write to communicate with
others, whether it is a friendly email, a formal business memo, a report, a job application, a
press release or a message of condolence. Your writing skills determine if you receive the
desired reaction from your reader. Did you inform, persuade, calm or entertain as you hoped?
The effectiveness of your communication can affect your daily life and your life course
outcomes. So, miscommunication can have serious consequences and unintended effects.

Learning how to write brief paragraphs and essays is one of the terrible experiences for
students in school, but it is also one of the essential skills. If kids do not attempt to learn the
skill of writing at a young age, they will face difficulties in mastering the skill in their later
life.Writing goes beyond school purposes. Businesses require candidates who can write and
communicate effectively. Even the digital age has not reduced the need for writing. Be it
emails, online chat conversations, faxes or website updates all these require excellent writing
skills.
Children who start learning writing skills from an early age achieve high levels of academic
success. These benefits result in excellent professional skills.Mastering over good writing at
an early age is associated with better outcomes on the overall performance of children in
school. Students who learn to write a complete sentence without an error from a very young
age are more likely to develop that skill while they become old.
3. PERFORMANCE PROBLEM
Writing is an important skill for language production. However it is considered a difficult
skill, particularly where English is a second language. Insufficient proficiency, inadequate
vocabulary, lack of ideas, writing anxiety and poor syntax and grammar on part of the
students are some problems associated with bad writing. This is further compounded by
untrained teachers, ineffective teaching methods and large classrooms. This inability to write
properly by students leads to failure in exams. This also affects their future employability
oppurtunities as they cannot write a proper presentation or even a simple email This skill
cannot be acquired by students on their own. To ensure uniformity in methodology and
delivery the teachers need to be trained .A proper transfer of writing skills can take place
from teacher to student if teachers are trained in the delivery of writing skills. Teachers who
are not trained in methodology cannot address the problem adequately.
