The teacher will introduce the 5Ws, model asking and answering questions about a sample story, have students complete worksheets answering 5W questions about stories, and assess their comprehension by asking students 5W questions. Who, What, When, Where, Why and How?

Subject/Grade Level: Reading/ 2nd Grade

Time/Duration: 45 mins (2-3 days)

Objectives

● Students will be able to ask and answer who, when, where, how, why, and what questions
to show understanding of key details in a text.

Standards/TEKS

● 110.4 English Language Arts and Reading (b)(6)(G): evaluate details read to determine
key ideas

Anticipatory Set

● What are the 5 W’s? Who can help me remember our 5 W's?

Teaching: Input/Mini Lesson

● Ask students to come up with a question for each of the 5 W's and share them. Instruct
the students to come up with a "how" question for the story, as well. For example: "How
did the main character solve the conflict?" Instruct your students to share at least one
question that they wrote with the class.

Teaching: Modeling

● Ask your students if they know what the 5 W's are. Write them on the board if they come
up with the correct answer. Add the ones that they didn't come up with on the board.
● Hand out “The 5 “W’s”
● Read the story “The 5 “W’s” and answer the questions as a class

Teaching: Checking for Understanding

● I will have students complete the Fill In The Story worksheet. Instruct students to finish
the story. After that, ask them to write a question and answer for each W and "how" for
the story. I will be roaming around the classroom asking students about the story that they
just read. Ask them the 5 W's and "how" about the story. Explain to your students that a
good story always answers the 5 W’s and "how" questions.
Questioning strategies:

● How do we know if this is a good story? A good story always answers the 5 W’s and
"how" questions
● Remind students when writing the 5 W’s to write their answers in complete sentences.

Guided Practice:

● I will have students complete the Fill In The Story worksheet. Instruct students to finish
the story. After that, ask them to write a question and answer for each W and "how" for
the story. I will be roaming around the classroom asking students about the story that they
just read. Ask them the 5 W's and "how" about the story. Explain to your students that a
good story always answers the 5 W’s and "how" questions.

Closure

● Read the Jack and the Beanstalk worksheets to the class.

● Remind your students to pay attention, as they will be answering questions on their own
about the story.
● After reading the story, ask the students to complete the Jack and the Beanstalk
worksheet.
● Remind the students to answer questions in full, complete sentences.

Independent Practice

● Ask students to read the The Ugly Duckling worksheet.

● Ask students to answer the 5 W's and "how" questions about the reading in their
notebooks. For example: "Who are the characters in the story? When and where does it
take place? How is the Ugly Duckling different from the other ducklings?"
