Deductive LG

This lesson guide outlines a lesson on teaching grammar concepts of tone and mood. The objectives are for students to differentiate between tone and mood using a Venn diagram, write a paragraph showing how open they are to others, and sing a song that affects them. Examples are used to demonstrate tone, which is the author/speaker's attitude, and mood, which is the feeling created in the reader. Students work in groups to demonstrate tone through facial expressions and mood through expressions and sounds. The lesson aims to help students understand and express feelings and emotions while encouraging control and boundaries in relationships.

B. Presentation
This afternoon we will further explore the two
elements of literature in which it will talk about
the feelings or the emotion towards a certain
texts. Fasten your seatbelt for we are about to “TONE and MOOD”
travel with the…. everybody read.

Statement of the Aim

Listen attentively because at the end of the
discussion all of you are expected to: OBJECTIVES
everybody read.

Generalization
I have here the definition of the tone and the
mood.

Tone- it refers to the narrator’s or the speaker’s

attitude towards the subject.

e.g.
“Today, I feel small- looked down on and
disregarded. My thoughts are of little
importance. My words have no bearing on the
weight of the world. I am tired of being taken
for granted. If only I could take back a fraction
of what I give. But my efforts go unnoticed,
and my soul keeps on wishing to be noticed, to
be valued; t be understood”

In the given example it is understood that the

author or the speaker is sad/lonely/tired. Notice
her words like “I feel so small”, “I am tired of
being taken for granted”, therefore we can
conclude that the tone of the given example
from Lang Leav’s Sea of Strangers is gloomy
or it impels sadness.
Another example.
“You came into my life and made everything
else feel like a rehearsal. Love always came to
me as a question, but with you, it felt like an
answer. I didn’t know I had put up my walls
until you brought them crashing down. I
couldn’t figure out why love was different with
you until I realized it hadn’t been love with
anyone else.”

Who can now tell to the class the tone of the The tone of the poem is pleasure or happiness
poem? Yes, Mr. Kenneth. because of the author’s feeling that she had
found a very unique love which she deserves
for the rest of her life.

Brilliant! Let’s give a brilliant clap to Mr. No ma’am.

Greg. Do you know how to do the brilliant
clap?

Brilliant Clap: clap 5 times then stamp 3 times ( do as told)

then say BRILLIANT!

Now let’s move on to the Mood of a literary

piece.

Mood-is the general feeling or atmosphere that

a piece of writing creates within the reader

e.g.
“you own my heart, you will always own my
heart, only you are its beautiful art. But when
you disappear, even if I’m the focus of the
crowd, I look for myself, here and there. I look
everywhere. But find myself nowhere, not
anywhere.”

In the given example taken from Khadija

Rupa’s “Unexpressed Feelings”, the author is I feel sorry for her because of what had
sad and lonely. How about you? How do you happened to her. I feel sad and it seems that I
feel upon reading her lines? Yes, Ms. Kristine am on her shoe to feel this now.

Yes, the author’s feelings also affect you upon

reading. She feels sad and you feel sad for her
and that feeling of yours indicates that you
have felt the pain, the loneliness and sadness of
the writer/ author. That is the mood of the
given example.

Next example.
“All her life she believed- a princess she could
be. But deep down, somewhere far within, she
knew he would never conduct himself- like a
charming prince.”
The author’s line somehow confuses me; it is
In the second example, how do you feel? Yes, because the character that she’s been using
Ms. Bless from group 2. assumes to much even if she knows the truth
that the man he chose will never do the same
thing she did to him.

Absolutely!

Further Discussion

For you to further understand the difference

between tone and mood, I have prepared some
examples. Work with your group. All you have
to do is to show to us the feeling of the author-
tone by your facial expressions for 7 seconds
then later show the mood or your feeling
towards the given example by your facial
expression and your possible sounds for it. It
can be that you will cry, or you will laugh or
you will shout depending on what is the
decision within your group. You are also given
5 seconds to show that to the class. For the
group who can create first their expression
shall be given the chance to present it in front
and shall receive 20 additional points for each
example. You are given 2 minutes to decide Yes ma’am!
the expressions you will use. Is it understood?
Ready!
Are you ready?

“Do you remember what you said to me that

day, long before you whispered we knew that
we would be, before you whispered my name
to me, raw and tender, like it hurt you to say it? Possible expressions: sadness/ loneliness(tone)
You told me you were the bravest when you’re Possible act: Crying(Mood)
in love, so don’t you dare stand there and tell
you’re afraid.”

“It feels perilous to love you, like a dust storm Tone: happiness/ pleasure
swallowing up the sky or a comet skimming Mood: smiling
the stratosphere. But it’s an honor to love you.
I will love you for as long as I can.”

“Healing happens when you stop wrestling

with the idea that you gave them power to pin
you down and realize that you simply got in Tone: pleasure
the ring to fight with good intentions. Mood: smiling
You may have lost, but you won yourself
back.”

You did a great job sweethearts and for that

let’s give everyone a FACEBOOK clap.
(do as told)
Facebook clap: clap 3 times, stamp 3 times
then say SHARE!

Do you still have questions about tone and None ma’am.

mood?
Very good! That means that you really
understand their difference.

Values Integration

Our activity earlier is all about expressing or

feelings and emotions towards a certain thing
or example. In our life we are more of
expressing who we are or what we have. We
tend to be open to everyone else. I am not
saying that we should not be open to others
especially to our parents but my point is handle
and control yourself. Do not always introduce
yourself to them, let them discover who you
are. In terms of sharing your problems for you
to have some sort of advice, choose the right
people to share it with because not everyone is
a listener, some might ignore you and might
say words that will lead you to lose your
confidence in handling certain things or doubt
within your capacity.

Application

I. Directions: In your group, pinpoint the

difference between the tone and the mood
