Unit 5
Understanding the requirements of working to a brief
Formal Brief
A Formal Brief is a document which provides specific guidelines and
information regarding what the client wants the production company to
do.
Advantages:
This type of brief is easy to understand and follow, as it outlines
exactly what needs to be done.
Disadvantages:
The production company has little to no creative input into the film
as the client sets out exactly what way they want it completed.
Informal Brief
An Informal Brief is when you work with a client on a project in a more
relaxed manner, where the client will typically provide a basic idea of
what they want and trust the production company to create a product
they will be satisfied with.
Advantages:
There is no strict contract or agreement relating to production of
film, meaning anything is up for negotiation from all parties
involved.
Disadvantages:
There is usually no documented or legal proof that the work was
completed by the production company.
Commission Brief
A commission brief is when a larger company will commission a small
group/company to create a product with them based on the larger
company’s plan and ideas.
Advantages
This gives a small company the opportunity to work on something
with a larger, more established company.
The larger company may hire the small company in future if the
project goes well.
Disadvantages
The lack of production involvement from the larger company may
lead to a product being completed that they aren't entirely happy
with.
Contractual Brief
A Contractual Brief is a legally-binding agreement that outlines the
expectations that the client has with the production company. This type
of brief is essentially the same as a Formal Brief with the addition of a
contract being signed between the two parties, making following the
exact instructions a lot more important to the production company.
Advantages:
The production company knows exactly what they have to do, how
they have to do it, what they need, etc.
Disadvantages
Once the contract is signed the production company has zero say
in what happens and failure to follow the contract could possibly
result in legal issues
Tender Brief
A Tender Brief is when a company will put out an advertisement for a
project that needs to be created, with production companies then
creating pitches for the client. A selection process will then ensue with
one production company being chosen.
Advantages
There are lots of options for the company in regards to who they
wish to hire to create their project.
Disadvantages
Pitch and Selection Process is excessive and time consuming.
Waste of time for any producer not chosen.
