CYME
Power Engineering Software 1 – Overview

1 – Overview

The CYME Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles module is a planning tool that allows users to
perform time range analysis based on a combination of historical consumption patterns and real-time
monitoring. The module’s two main applications are the Energy Profile Manager (CEPM) and the Load
Flow with Profiles.
Performing accurate time range analysis provides a wide range of engineering benefits to system
planners such as a better evaluation of the annual system losses, a better evaluation of device
overloads in percentage and in duration and a better identification of off-peak abnormal conditions often
undetected using traditional peak condition system analysis. The accurate modeling of the loading
conditions at any moment in time is achieved through a series of load scaling options combining
customer pattern consumptions and actual meter readings at strategic points on the systems.
The basis of time range analysis relies on the detailed modeling of customer consumption patterns
(load curves). These load curves may be provided by several systems including automated meter
reading systems, customer billing information systems and load research data. The data available is
usually classified in two types of metering: interval metering (15 min, 30 min or hourly readings) and
non-interval metering (monthly billing). To facilitate the management of these different types of data
sources, the Energy Profile Manager allows the viewing, editing and importing of load profiles and
metering demands from various types of data sources.
The Load Flow with Profiles analysis functionality utilizes the data organized with the Energy Profile
Manager which also supports the viewing of the results produced by the analysis for a period specified.

Accessing the applications

Energy Profile Manager

You can open the Energy Profile Manager module by clicking the Profiles and Consumption
buttons/hyperlinks found in a number of the dialog boxes into the CYME Power Engineering Software.
These commands access the module and display the profiles based on the data present. For more
details, refer to Chapter 5 – Interfacing CYME with the Energy Profile Manager. You can also open the
Energy Profile Manager using the CYME menu item Analysis > Load Flow with Profiles > Edit
Profiles.
When accessing the module using the File > Tools > Energy Profile Manager menu command in
CYME, the Energy Profile Manager Wizard is displayed; see section titled Wizard in this document for a
description of the commands.

Load Flow with Profiles functionality

The command Analysis > Load Flow with Profiles> Run displays the interface to set the parameters
of the analysis. The profiles that are to be used by the analysis are set using the Energy Profile
Manager software.

2 – Energy Profile Manager

This chapter describes the menu commands and toolbar options of the Energy Profile Manager
software that allow the creation/editing of Energy Profiles. It also contains an overview of the commands
available to customize the charts.

File Menu

Open Database
Use this function to specify the profile database and the billing database you want to access during
simulation. Paired profile and billing databases will be given a connection name to allow quick selection.
Four database types are available: None, Microsoft Access, Oracle and SQL Server. Even if in our
examples below we illustrate profile and billing databases of same type, keep in mind that you can have
any combination of database types among the fifteen possible. It is not possible to choose None for
both profile and billing databases. In that case, the module will only be able to manipulate results from
CYME and you won’t need any connection to do that.
At initialization, when you first load the Energy Profile Manager module, any use of this command will
display the following dialog. The dialog box will contain different fields depending on the Database
Type selected. See Microsoft Access Database, Oracle Database and SQL Server Database for related
details.

Let’s explain the day type part of the format.

 1 Day Type: a typical day will be used for all seven days of the week for a
given season or month.
 2 Days Type : for a given season or month, a typical day will be used for
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday another typical day will
be used for Saturday and Sunday.
 3 Days Type : for a given season or month, a typical day will be used for
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday ; another typical day will
be used for Saturday and another one for Sunday.
 5 Days Type: for a given season or month, a typical day will be used for
Monday; another one (Weekday) for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday;
another one for Friday; another one for Saturday; another one for Sunday.
This special feature will help to speed up the profiles data capture. For
example, for a 4 Seasons 1 Day Type, to enter the data profile for the 91
winter days, you will type in the profile data for one day and the same profile
will be copied automatically for the other days. In order to verify this fact,
change the view mode from View by Day Type to View by Date.
Note: Once you have defined a profile type as having a specific profile
format, this characteristic will be a permanent attribute of any
particular element within this profile type.

Customer Type, Metered Loads, Meters, Networks, Generators, the other (profile types) sections of
the interface will be displayed depending on the profile type you choose to import from CYME. You may
have a maximum of 5 sections if you select all five types and there are elements of all types to import.
All five sections present basically the same interface. Customer Type profile presents a slight difference
in the first column. Instead of Ids or device numbers, it will list customer types.

Note: You may sort each table rows in alphabetical order by clicking on any column header.

ID/Device This column will list the device IDs, device numbers or customer types of the
Number/ elements involved.
Customer Type

Present In In this section, the column CYME will indicate if the associated element is
present in the CYME database or not, whereas the Load Profiles column will
indicate if it is present in the Energy Profile Manager database or not.
Presence or absence of an element is represented respectively by the
symbols and placed in the associated cell.

Network ID In this section, the column CYME will list the network IDs of the elements in
the CYME database if they exist. The column Load Profiles will list the
network IDs of the elements in the Energy Profile Manager database.

in a tree structure whose branches names are based on the contents of the Output tab of CYME Load
Flow Analysis with Profiles dialog box as well as the date and time of the simulation.

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 33
CYME
2 – Energy Profile Manager Power Engineering Software

The figures above will be used to explain the tree structure nomenclature. Simulation Reports is the
name of the root. In fact it replaces the name of the report folder you set in the Reports tab of the
Preferences dialog box as mentioned in section Reports.

The branch (subdirectory) name “LoadProfiles_Sep_19_15h06m28” is made up of the prefix

LoadProfiles with which the date of the simulation in the format _Month_Day_ is first concatenated
and then the simulation time in the format HHhMMmSS. Thus the subdirectory name tells you that the
Load Flow Analysis with Profiles took place on September 19th at 15h06m28.
The Charts, Global Reports, Time Interval Reports subdirectories under
“LoadProfiles_Sep_19_15h06m28” come from the selection made in the Load Flow Analysis With
Profiles dialog box. See the first illustration above.

 Charts means that you have selected at least one element in the group box Charts for Monitored
Device and results are probably available.

 Global Reports means that results are available for some or all global report types in the group
box Global Reports.

 Time Interval Reports means that you selected at least one element in the group box Reports for
Time Intervals and results are probably available.

34 CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide
CYME
Power Engineering Software 2 – Energy Profile Manager

We continue the explanation on the tree structure nomenclature by expanding the three subdirectories
Charts, Global Reports and Time Interval Reports as shown in the illustration above.
The element KVA Profile_Recloser_NEW220_2008_09_18, under subdirectory Charts, indicates that
the user requested a KVA Profile chart for the recloser NEW220 during a simulation that took place on
September 18th of year 2008.
The five subdirectories (Device Usage Curve, Load Duration Curve, Monitored Device Summary,
Network Losses, Network Summary) under Global Reports show that the user activated all available
options in the Global Reports group box from the Output tab of the CYME Load Flow Analysis with
Profiles dialog box.
Subdirectory Device Usage Curve contains two curves: the first for the distributed load with Device
Number 10008-1, the second for the fuse with Device Number 10161-1.
Subdirectory Load Duration Curve contains three curves: all three for distributed loads 10008-1,
10063-1 and 10081-1.
Subdirectory Monitored Device Summary contains two summary reports: the first on cable equipment
132470 and the second on two-winding transformer NEW224.
Subdirectory Network Losses contains two reports: one for each network selected, GA04 and GA05.
Subdirectory Network Summary contains two summary reports: one for each network selected, GA04
and GA05.
The report names under Time Interval Reports follow the format Voltage drop –
Complete_YYYY_MM_DD_HHhMM. It means a complete voltage drop report is generated for a
simulation at time HHhMM on MM DDth of year YYYY. The figure above illustrates a simulation for a
th
time range mode type analysis over a twelve hours period on September 18 of year 2008 at an interval
of 60 minutes (1hour). Other Time interval Reports exist, but the nomenclature will follow the same
pattern so you can infer at first glance what report it is.

This representation will allow you to give prominence to a curve over the others and to locate data in a
given curve. It is at the same time a data editor. You can change the Y values by selecting the desired
cells and typing in the new values. When needed, a scrolling bar is available to allow you access to all
curve values.
The illustration above shows the data grid for three curves (Red, Blue, and Cyan). The X values shown
in dark grey cannot be changed. The scroll bar is not shown because all values are covered within the
window.

If you position the cursor in the cell containing Series 1 for a few seconds (2), the entire row will be
highlighted in order to indicate that you want to emphasize only the curve Series 1 while keeping the
other curves hidden. In that state, if you drag the cursor over Series 2 cell, this curve will be the only
one displayed and its associated row will be highlighted.
In like manner, if you position the cursor in any cell of the grey tinted row (abscissa values) for a few
seconds, the entire column will be highlighted to indicate that you want to emphasize values of all
curves for the selected abscissa while keeping the rest of the curves hidden. The same function works
for any of the other cells at the only difference that one curve value will be displayed at the expense of
all other curves values.

If you make a right click anywhere within the data grid area, the following menu will pop up.

3 – Editing Profiles

Regardless of the profile type, adding profiles will start with the same dialog Add New Profile. You may
refer to chapter Wizard for more details about this dialog box. The following is the dialog box for the first
element (GP-4S-2D) of the profile type Generator.

The important thing to remember about this dialog box is that once you have created the first element of
a profile type, the profile format and the time interval cannot be changed. This explains why the dialog
box to edit the next elements of a profile type contains only the parameters that may be changed. This
condition will hold until you delete the last element of a given profile type.
This being said, we will focus in the next sections on the actual aspect of capturing profile data points
for the selected profile type element. The best way to approach this aspect is in the View Mode
perspective (see Main Application Toolbar, Date and Day Type Profiles).

CYME
3 – Editing Profiles Power Engineering Software

Editing Date Profile

We call a date profile any type of profile created with either one of profile 8760 Hours or 365 Days.
When you invoke the Show function in the Profile Browser tab for the date type profile for anyone of
the five profile types available, the following calendar-style interface will open. It allows you to define a
profile for each day of the selected year.

Click on the left or the right arrow next to the year (2008 in the illustration) to respectively select the
preceding or the next year. Make a right click on any tab from Jan trough Dec to select the desired
month.
Double-click anywhere inside the region representing a day in the calendar in order to enter a new
profile. Depending on the choice made in the field When creating a new profile found in the
Miscellaneous tab of the Preferences dialog box, a chart or a grid will open to allow you to enter the
profile points. In the case where a chart opens, the function Data Grid must be active so you can enter
the data; you cannot enter the data graphically by moving points for example.

Note: Whatever choice you might make, you can always change your mind by selecting the
appropriate command in the Chart menu (Chart > Basic Chart or Chart > Grid (by Hour)
or Chart > Grid (by Day)).

CYME
Power Engineering Software 3 – Editing Profiles

Editing a Profile through the Grid

The interface to enter data through a grid looks like the following.

You will have to fill in only the columns initialized to zero; the other columns are not editable. You may
have to fill either one, two, three, or six columns depending on whether the Phase attribute you select
for the profile is Total or By Phase, or the Units attribute has two components (kW-P, Amps-PF, etc.).
You may also have more data to enter if you have chosen either one of 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10
minutes, 15 minutes or 30 minutes as the time interval when you create the profile.

To enter new data, you can proceed in one of these following ways.

 Make a left-click in a cell to give it the focus; then start typing in the value.

 Double-click in a cell to select it (the old value is highlighted). Then start typing in the new value.

 Make a left-click in a cell to give it the focus. Make a right double-click on this cell to select it (the
old value is highlighted). Then start typing in the new value.
To modify a data, use one of the last three methods to select the old data. Then use the keyboard
arrows, <Home>, <End>, <Delete>, or <Backspace> keys to move the cursor within the cell and delete
the characters.
When the data entry is completed, you may continue the editing by going back to the Calendar
(Element) tab and select another day. When you enter profile data for a day, the profile curve is
automatically displayed in the calendar at the day location as shown below.

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 65
CYME
3 – Editing Profiles Power Engineering Software

If you open a grid window to enter the profile data for a day, and then close it without entering any data,
the profile will still be saved with all values initialized to zero. This type of profile will appear in the
calendar as shown below. You must delete these profiles.

Editing a Profile through the Chart

The interface used to enter data though chart looks like the following.

If the grid at the bottom (you may change this location) of the chart is not there, click on the data grid
icon to display it. For the same reasons mentioned in the previous chapter, you may have to fill either
one, two, three, or six rows to complete the data entry.
To enter new data, double-click in a cell to select it (the old value is highlighted). Then start typing in
the new value. When required, a horizontal scroll bar will appear under the grid to allow you access to
the cells that might not be visible in the current view.
To modify a value, select it first. Then use the keyboard arrows, <Home>, <End>, <Delete>,
<Backspace> keys to move the cursor within the cell and delete characters.
After completing the data entry for a day, continue the editing by going back to the Calendar (Element)
tab and select another day.

CYME
Power Engineering Software 3 – Editing Profiles

Editing Day Type Profile

The day-type profile uses basically the same type of interface with the small difference that the day-type
essentially requires less data entry work.
We have ten day-type types in two groups: Season and Month. We will not cover them all, because the
underlying principle is the same. Instead, we will address the essential points through two examples,
one for each group having in mind what was said in chapter Wizard, specifically the description about
the Profile Format field in the Add New Profile dialog box.

Editing a 12 Months – 2 Days Type Profile

For a Month day type profile, you will be required to enter data for all twelve months as illustrated in the
example shown below. What will change from a specific 12 Months type to another one is the total
number of profiles you should define for each month.
In this example, you have three profiles to define: HOLIDAY, WEEKDAY and WEEKEND. The
interesting point about these profiles is that HOLIDAY will apply to all holidays type of days of the
selected month if any, WEEKDAY will apply to all Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays,
Fridays of the selected month whereas WEEKEND will apply to all Saturdays and Sundays of the
selected month.

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 67
CYME
3 – Editing Profiles Power Engineering Software

In term of interaction with this interface, all we have said about data entry for a given day in the Date
type calendar holds here also. In fact, you can switch from a View by Day Type representation to a
View by Date representation even though the reverse is not true if the profile type has been created
with the format attribute 8760 Hours or 365 Days. In a View by Date mode, the data duplicating /
copying effect is preserved. If you enter profile data for any week day, it will be applied to all other week
days of the selected month. It is the same for any weekend day, if you enter profile data for any
Saturday or Sunday, it will be applied to all Saturday and Sunday of the selected month.

Editing a 4 Seasons - 2 Days Type Profile

For a Season day type profile, you will be required to enter data for all four seasons as illustrated in the
example shown below. What will change from a specific 4 Seasons type to another one is the total
number of profiles you should define for each season.

68 CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide
CYME
Power Engineering Software 3 – Editing Profiles

For the Season day type type, you are also given the opportunity to define a Holiday profile and
additional specific day type profiles that you might consider useful in some special circumstances. The
important point about this specific day type lies in its date independence aspect.
When you enter a new profile for this specific day type, double-clicking inside the Add Day Type box
will not give immediate access to a chart or a grid. Instead, you will have to first fill in the Add Day Type
dialog.

Day Type Enter the name desired for this special day type profile.

Apply to all Check this option to create a day type with the same name in all four
seasons seasons. Note that the profile data you are about to enter will not be
automatically copied given that you have the freedom to define a different
profile for each season. Nonetheless, if you want to have the same profile
you may use the Copy command.

Apply to all IDs Check this option to create a day type with the same name for all existing
of the same elements of the same group. By group we mean either one of Customer
group type Profiles, Metered Load Profiles, Generator Profiles, Meter Demand
Profiles, Network Demand Profiles.

Ok Click on this button to access a chart or a grid where you can enter the profile
data as previously explained.

Cancel Click on this button to discard any modification and close the dialog.

Multiple Windows Editing

In normal utilization, the active window takes up all the space below the Tab Title Area. Multiple
windows functionality makes it possible for many windows to share this space. You can make the most
of it in many situations but in particular it can be convenient for comparison purpose or for getting visual
feedback when editing profile data in grid. The illustration below is an example of window partitioning
you can create.

Let us see how this function works. First of all, this function is enabled only if at least two windows are
opened. Let’s say that you have the following windows opened that you want to be able to visualize at
the same time.

70 CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide
CYME
Power Engineering Software 3 – Editing Profiles

You can proceed like this:

1. Make a left-click in a window title (let’s say Calendar (RESIDENTIAL)) and keep the left-mouse
button pressed so you can see the cross-shaped splitter panel.

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 71
CYME
3 – Editing Profiles Power Engineering Software

2. While you keep the left-mouse button pressed, move the cursor over the splitter panel to select
where you want the window to be located. Choose one of the four boxes with the arrow. A color
feedback shows you where the window will be inserted.

3. Now that you have selected the location, release the left-mouse button to move the window in its
new location.

To deal with more than two windows, the procedure is essentially the same except that after the first
subdivision you should also select, among available partitions, the one you want to subdivide further.

72 CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide
CYME
Power Engineering Software 3 – Editing Profiles

Consequently, from step 1 you will have to slide the mouse in such a way that the splitter panel appears
in that partition.
To merge two windows after they have been partitioned, use the same procedure with the modification
suggested in the previous paragraph for step 1 and in addition, modify step 2 to select the center
position of the splitter panel instead of one of the other four positions.

Profile Editing Contextual Menu

When you are about to define profile data for a particular day or day type, the day’s box is in the Add
Profile state as follows.

The box being in that state, if you make a right-click anywhere inside it, the following menu will pop up.

Add Profile Lets you enter a new profile data for selected element. It will lead you either to
a chart or a grid form for the data captures (see Editing a Profile through the

Load Scaling Tab

80 CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide
CYME
Power Engineering Software 4 – Load Flow with Profiles

Load Scaling The first method Use the loads as defined in the load profiles means to use
Method the loads from the currently active Load Profile database without any
adjustment. Apply the coincidence factors by customer type means the
coincidence factors specified for each customer type in Customer Types
dialog. You can access this dialog using the command Network > Customer
Types (Load Allocation Tab) from the main menu or you can click on the
Edit button. Coincidence factors can be defined for metered and non-metered
loads. You may refer to chapter Load Allocation Tab in the CYME Reference
Manual for more details.
The second method Scale the loads defined in the load profiles to match
meter and/or network demands implies that a load allocation analysis must
be run to adjust the loads from the profiles based on meter or network
demands. Obviously, to use this option effectively you must previously provide
meter load profiles for the simulation time period (See chapter Profile Browser
for more details on the procedure to add meter load profiles in the database).
When you choose this option, it is possible to specify what type of loads can
be adjusted and what type of loads must be considered as fixed loads. The
checkboxes under the columns Metered and Non-metered allow you to enter
this information for each customer type available. Checkmark the option
Unlock manually locked loads to instruct CYME not to subtract their values
from the metered demand.

Adjustments Tab

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 81
CYME
4 – Load Flow with Profiles Power Engineering Software

Load The “Customer type” column will be filled with the different client types
Adjustments associated with the loads found in the network. For each customer type you
can choose to use either setting: Customer type settings or Global settings.
Customer type settings: This choice ensures that the supplied load’s profile
will be recovered and used. If no profile was provided for this load, the profile
corresponding to the customer type (the value in the 'Customer type'
column) of this charge will be used.
Global settings: This choice allows you to manually specify the name of a
profile to apply to all loads of a type. For example, if you have an
ALL_LOADS profile that contains a typical curve to use for all loads, you can
enter the name of this profile and therefore, at the time of the analysis, the
same curve will be used for each of the loads found. The selection of “Global
settings” will prevail over the option “Adjust customer loads using customer
type profiles only”.
Adjust customer loads using customer type profiles only: This option
aims to improve the performance of the analysis by searching profiles using
only the customer types instead of searching profiles using the identifier of
each load. This applies to a customer owning profiles by types of clients and
who wants to avoid unnecessary research to the database.

Generator The “Device Type” column will be filled with the available types. For each
Contribution device type you can choose to use either setting: Individual settings or Global
Adjustments settings.
Individual settings: While updating the generator, its identifier is used to
search for its profile among the database’s profiles.
Global settings: This choice allows you to manually specify the name of a
profile to apply to all generators of a type. For example, if you have an
ALL_GENERATORS profile that contains a typical curve to use for all
generators, you can enter the name of this profile and therefore, at the time
of the analysis, the same curve will be used for each of the generators found.
Adjust the generators contribution using the profiles: This option means
the profile associated with each device type selected (Photovoltaic, WECS,
Synchronous Generator etc) that can be applied individually or globally.

Import Profiles
This section presents the format used for the file needed by the import process of the Energy Profile
Manager. This file is not an XML file nor a CSV file, but a CYME-defined format that will allow the user
to easily create and modify its own import files. The import process has been designed so that the user
is notified every time a line or a value in the file is invalid, letting him know exactly where the error is and
how to correct it.

General
The user must create a text-file, using a simple text editor, and then define one or more profile blocks.
The process will then import each profile data defined in the file.

The user must create a text-file, using a simple text editor, and then define one or more billing blocks.
The process will then import each billing data defined in the file.

Format

The file must begin by the tag [PROFILE_BILLING]. To create multiple blocks of data to import with
different formats, simply defines multiple FORMAT sections. Each time the import process runs into this
tag, it creates a new section of data to import using this format.

Tags
This section presents the different tags and their permitted options and values. There are two types of
tags: section tags and options tags. A section tag is a tag beginning with an opening square bracket ( [ )
and ending with a closing square bracket ( ] ). An option tag is a tag under a section tag, ending with an
equal character ( = ) .
Example
Section tag: [PROFILE_DESCRIPTION]

Option tag: PROFILE_TYPE=value

Section tags
PROFILE_BILLING

This tag indicates the beginning of a file of data to import. The file must contain at
least one of this tag in order to begin the import process. Here are the permitted
options under this section:

CYME 8.1 - Steady State Analysis with Load Profiles - Users Guide 99

6 – Format Description Power Engineering Software

FORMAT
 This tag is optional.
 Permitted values: LOADID, NETWORKID, CUSTOMERTYPE, FROMDATE,
TODATE, KWH, USAGEFACTOR
 All the values are required, and the case (uppercase or lowercase) is not
important.
 The order of the values is not important.

Following this tag is a list of data separated by commas. Each value must match the
FORMAT defined in the PROFILE_BILLING section. Each line represents a set of
data for one time. Note that the case of the values is never important.

Name Type Restrictions

LOADID string -
CUSTOMERTYPE string -
FROMDATE date A valid date (see notes below)
TODATE date A valid date (see notes below)
KWH double - (see notes below)
USAGEFACTOR double - (see notes below)

Notes

 FROMDATE and TODATE: Format required: dd/MM/yyyy. For example:

th
29/01/2008 stands for January 29 , 2008. Four-digit year format is used (for
example “2008” and not “08”). If date doesn’t follow this format, an error will be
generated.

 KWH and USAGEFACTOR: Note that the point delimiter (.) is used for the
decimal separator and no thousands delimiter is used.
