Circuit Breaker Testing Guide

The document provides instructions for using a CMC356 device to simulate closing and tripping circuit breakers by connecting leads from the device's binary/analog inputs and outputs to the circuit breaker and a 110VDC power supply. Two sets of red, white, and blue leads are connected from the CMC356 inputs to the circuit breaker phases, and a red lead from a 110VDC fuse is connected to the CMC356 output to energize the tripping coil. The appropriate auxiliary terminal on the circuit breaker is connected based on whether a closing or opening test is being performed, and a black lead provides a return path from the auxiliary terminal to the 110VDC neutral. Tests are then configured and run by

CB OPENING/TRIPS

 To Close & Trip circuit breakers we use the CMC356 to simulate this function.
 We perform these test on our Laptop’s via plugging an Ethernet cable from our laptop
to the CMC 356.

Setting up for test:

Plug in Red White & Blue leads into the Binary/Analog inputs (Inputs 2, 3 & 4)

Use both inputs top & bottom, which will require you to use two sets of test leads, 2 Red, 2
White & 2 Blue.

Connecting Red to 2, White to 3 & Blue to 4 on the top set of inputs & do the same
configuration with the second set of test leads on the bottom inputs.

Connect other end of test leads to the top & bottom of your Circuit breaker to the correct
phases.

 We need 110VDC supply to energize the tripping coil, to achieve this we use the 110VDC
supply which is powered from our Battery Charger Cabinet which we pick up from one
of our fuses in the switch board.

To achieve this we connect our Red test lead into the Positive side of a 110VDC fuse (eg. FU13),
you will find this in the switchboard.

Note: Open Fuse, while setting up your leads, close fuse once ready for testing.

Plug the other end of the lead into the top Binary output of output 1 (CMC 356)

We then plug another Lead into the bottom slot of output 1. This allows us to create the action
we want to see.

If performing a Closing operation we connect the other end of that Lead into the Top (Positive)
of Auxiliary terminal 4 (Fourth terminal from the right, Top of Circuit Breaker).

If performing a Opening operation we connect the other end of that Lead into the Top
(Positive) of Auxiliary terminal 3 (Third terminal from the right, Top of Circuit Breaker).
 We now have to allow a return path to 110VDC Neutral.

Connect another Lead (I would chose a black Lead to use as it is your neutral path) to the
bottom (Neutral) of the Auxiliary point(3 or 4) Depending on which test you are doing &

Connect other end to the 110VDC Neutral Fuse (eg. FU13)

Once we have all our test leads in position.

We associate CMC 356 with our Laptop (Test Universe).

Modify Test Card & Perform Test:

Click on Test Card

Go into Report Sheet (Should say eg. SB-77-D01-Q01)

Go into Device (Change information to suit)

Right Click on CB Close Contact Time – Press Clear

Close 110VDC + Fuse (eg. FU13) in switchboard

Left Click on CB Close Contact Time – Press Start

Do the same for sequence for CB Trip Times
