Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method
• Plane frame stiffness matrix can be obtained
by the addition of truss and beam stiffness
matrix which have been already developed
for local coordinate system.
• Since frame members may be vertical,
horizontal or inclined therefore
transformation matrix will be needed for
plane frame analysis.
• The development of local stiffness matrix and
Global stiffness matrix is given in subsequent
slides.

• Local stiffness matrix for Frame
• In frames three displacements per node are
present i.e. horizontal, vertical and rotation.

• Local stiffness matrix for Frame
• In general form q=k′d
• Where k′= Local stiffness matrix

• Now In order to obtain the Global Stiffness
matrix we have to use the following relation
ship.
• K= Tt x k′ x T Where T = Transformation mat.

• It is difficult to memorize previous matrix
therefore it is split into two parts as follows.

Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method
• Very Easy to Memorize
• Left portion is already memorized for truss
• Now 12/L3, 6/L2, 4/L and 2/L are repeated
every where in a sequence.

• Direction cosines have fixed sequence
• Signs
• K11= Last two negative for 1st row and col.
• K12 Follows Y sign and K21 is its transpose
• K22 follows diamond Shape

Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method
Procedure for analysis
• Write down the applied Load matrix “Q”.
• If there is UDL then first determine the
equivalent loads and then form Load matrix
“Q”
• Specify displacement matrix “D” containing
all known and unknown displacements.
• Determine frame stiffness matrix for all
members and then determine the total
stiffness matrix Kt

Plane frame analysis-Stiffness Method
Procedure for analysis
• Eliminate rows and columns corresponding
to known displacements and form Kmt
• Using Stiffness Equation (Q=KD) determine
unknown displacements.
• Now determine member internal forces and
reactions and at this stage if equivalent
loading is used then it must be adjusted.
• Now draw the Shear force and Bending
Moment Diagram.
