Tutorial 2

This document contains 4 questions regarding reservoir calculations using volumetric methods. Q1 asks to calculate original oil and gas in place, reserves, and remaining reserves for an oil reservoir. Q2 asks to calculate original gas in place and reserves for a dry gas reservoir. Q3 asks to calculate original fluid volumes and reserves for an oil reservoir with a gas cap. Q4 asks to calculate gas reserves and recovery factor for a gas reservoir with water influx.

Reservoir management: Tutorial 2

Q1: The following reservoir data were estimated from subsurface maps,
core analysis, well tests, and fluid samples obtained at several wells.

pi = 2,000 psia, = 31%,Sw = 38%

Boi = 1.2 RB/STB, Rs = 450 scf/STB, Reservoir temperature, T = 155F

Assume a solution-gas drive mechanism with no gas-cap drive and no

water influx. Recovery factor for this reservoir has been estimated at
14% of the OOIP.

Using the subsurface data from several wells, the geologist has made
a net oil isopach map. This map was drawn by hand and a planimeter
was used to get the following results:

Contour interval, ft Interval thickness, ft Area encompassed by

contour, acres
0 - 2000
20 20 1650
40 20 1400
60 20 1200
80 20 950

Using these data and the volumetric method:

1. Calculate reservoir bulk volume using the trapezoid method.
2. Calculate original oil in place.
3. Calculate original solution gas in place.
4. Calculate oil reserves for the reservoir at original conditions.
5. Calculate oil reserves at original conditions for an individual
well (WELL A) assuming a drainage area equal to the unit
spacing of 80 acres and an average net thickness of 65 feet
within the drainage area.
6. Calculate remaining oil reserves after cumulative oil production
is equal to 12 MMstb.

Q2: Calculate original gas In place, gas recovery factor and gas reserves in a
volumetric dry gas reservoir. The following reservoir data were estimated
from subsurface maps, core analysis, well tests, and fluid samples obtained
at several wells. Use these data with the volumetric method to estimate
original gas in place. Assume a volumetric dry gas reservoir. Calculate as
recovery factors and reserves for abandonment pressures of 750 and 200 psia.

Note: use the following to calculate the recovery factor

Q3: Calculate total original gas in place and oil reserves for an oil reservoir
with a gas cap. This reservoir has similar properties as the oil reservoir in Q1
and the gas reservoir in Q 2; however, this reservoir has an initial gas cap
above the oil reservoir. All reservoir data were estimated from subsurface
maps, core analysis, well tests, and fluid samples obtained at several wells.
Because of the solution-gas/gas-cap drive mechanisms, recovery factor for
the oil reservoir has been estimated at 35% of the OOIP.

Using these data and the volumetric method:

1. Calculate original oil in place.
2. Calculate original solution gas in place.
3. Calculate the original gas-cap gas in place.
4. Calculate the total gas in place.
5. Calculate the oil reserves at original conditions.

Q4: Calculate gas reserves and recovery factor for a gas reservoir with
water influx.

Calculate the gas reserves and the gas recovery factor using the data given
in Q2 and assuming the residual gas saturation is 35% at an abandonment
pressure of 750 psia. Assume the volumetric sweep efficiency is 100%.

How much is the recovery factor for Ev = 60%?
