ABSTRACT

The first thing which comes to our mind when we think about structural health
monitoring is detecting the existence of damages on the structure, then locating
the damage , identifying the types of damage and finally quantifying the severity
of damage.
It is necessary to employ signal processing and statistical classification to convert
sensor data on the infrastructural health status into damage info for assessment.
With the development of science and technology, understanding the health status
of bridge engineering structure through appropriate monitoring method plays vital
role in ensuring the safety of bridge. At the same time it also provides necessary
basis for the maintenance and reinforcement of bridge.
Health monitoring of large bridges can be performed by simultaneous
measurement of loads on the bridge and effects of these loads. It typically includes
monitoring of wind, weather, traffic, pre-stressing and stay cables, deck, pylons
and ground.
Provided with this knowledge, the engineers can estimate the loads and their
effects, estimate the state of fatigue or other limit state and forecast the probable
evolution of the bridge's health.
Moreover, the evaluation begins to set the limitation on what will be monitored
and how the monitoring will be accomplished. This evaluation starts to tailor the
damage identification process to features that are unique to the system being
monitored and tries to take advantage of unique features of the damage that is to
be detected.

1. Introduction
The report includes health monitoring, operational evaluation, data feature extraction and
statistical models development.

To fulfill the above criteria we have to detect the existence of the damage on the structure,
locate the damage, identify the types of damage and quantify the severity of the damage.

It is necessary to employ signal processing and statistical classification to convert sensor data on
the infrastructural health status into damage info for assessment.
Health monitoring of large bridges can be performed by simultaneous measurement of loads on
the bridge and effects of these loads. It typically includes monitoring of wind and weather, traffic,
pre-stressing and stay cables, deck, pylons and ground.

Provided with this knowledge, the engineer can estimate the loads and their effects, estimate
the state of fatigue or other limit state and forecast the probable evolution of the bridge's
health.

2. Circuit design of Regulated DC Power Supply

Operational evaluation attempts to answer four questions regarding the implementation of a
damage identification capability:

i) What are the life-safety and/or economic justification for performing the SHM?
ii) How is damage defined for the system being investigated and, for multiple
damage possibilities, which cases are of the most concern?
iii) What are the conditions, both operational and environmental, under which the
system to be monitored functions?
iv) What are the limitations on acquiring data in the operational environment?

Operational evaluation begins to set the limitations on what will be monitored and how the
monitoring will be accomplished. This evaluation starts to tailor the damage identification
process to features that are unique to the system being monitored and tries to take advantage
of unique features of the damage that is to be detected.

READINGS OF THE LOAD CELLS:
The figure below shows the graph of the readings taken by putting different loads on the bridge
at different positions. The figure 1, 2 and 3 are the snapshots of the readings.

4. Conclusion

The load or pressure measured by load cells are fed to signal conditioning circuit .Signal
conditioning circuit then processes the signal that it can be measured by Arduino. It also
amplifies the signal so that the change in voltage (that is too small to measure)which is produced
whenever there is a load change or pressure changes occur ,to a voltage level that can be
measured easily. Then the signal is further fed to Arduino mega system that also processes the
signal and generates another signal that can further be transmitted by using an Ethernet system.
Then the signal is given to raspberry pi systems which processes the signal and generate a
physical realization of how the readings are changing with respect to different loads in different
locations. Then a router is connected that gives the information to different computers. The
transmission of signal is done using MQTT protocol. A web page is developed using HTML in
which readings in form of round graph bar and also in numeric values is displayed. Depending
upon the readings a graph is drawn which displays variations in load changes with respect to
time and generate another signal when the load level rises to a threshold limit, which informs
that the bridge is overloaded and certain actions will have to take to prevent the damage to the
bridge .that could also helps in avoiding damage or collapsing of the bridge.
