LESSON

Types and Sizes of Linens, Pillows and Bedsheets

Linens, pillows, bedsheets and bath items come in various sizes according to the size
of mattresses and its use. Careful selection according to standard size, appearance
and price are considered in purchasing these items, because the labor cost to sort
them are high. Thus, this would also make purchasing, inventory and maintenance
easier.

Types of Linens used in Bedmaking

1. Duvet- a soft quilt which is used instead of an upper sheet and blanket.
2. Fitted Sheet- usually made of cotton cloth that is tailor-made to fit the beds. It is
specially sewn following the mattresses’ length, width and thickness with edges
sewn with garter all around to make it flexible.
3. Blankets- this should be made or natural fibers, such as thick cotton, flannel or
wool. This must be soft and loosely woven, so that the person using it feels
comfortable.
4

4. Comforters- this is a padded bed cover, usually quilted. It is soft and warm to
touch as it is made of cotton fabric. They are light, molds themselves to the body
and do not slip off the bed.
5. Bedspread- this is placed on top of bedsheets and blankets, to cover the whole
stretch of the bed with drops all around which almost touches the floor.
6. Bed skirts- a pleated cloth attached to the bed frame just below the bed. This is
attached for aesthetic purposes as it covers the lower side of the bed so that the
feet and underneath portions of the bed is not seen.
7. Runners- a stirp cloth that is mostly satin and has attractive designs. This serves
the same purpose as table runners, to add accent to the bedspread.

Procedures in Bedmaking
The best way to welcome guests is to provide them with clean beds and linens of
excellent quality.

Turndown and make up Beds and Cots

• Remove soiled bed linen from the bed.
• Check if the mattress pad or mattress protector is stained, torn or damaged.
If everything is okay, straighten it and make sure the mattress is properly
aligned. To avoid injuries, align the mattress with your leg and not your back.
• If the mattress is stained, remove it.
• Get a clean mattress pad (this comes in various sizes, so be sure to use the
correct one), unfold it right side up, place it on the mattress and spread evenly
over the center of the bed.
• Smoothen any wrinkles.
• Make sure you have the correct size of bedsheets.
• Do not use stained or torn sheets, place them in your soiled linen bag instead.
6

• Take three fresh sheets and pillow cover or slips according to bed size.

Common Rules in Bedmaking

1. Stripping the bed refers to removing all soiled sheets from the bed. Two people
can work together to strip a bed faster and conveniently. To do it faster, fold each
layer of the bed linen neatly into three before removing it from the bed.
2. Mitering the corner is folding the corners of the bedsheet at the bed’s corners, to
give it a neat and finished look and also to keep the bedsheet tight and secured
even if there is a person lying on the bed.

Figure 5: https://bit.ly/3b4mquA
3. Loosen the bed cloth at the foot of the bed to allow the person lying down, to
move their feet freely.
