Additives & Admixture
Additives
A substance added in small amounts to something else to improve, strengthen, or otherwise alter
it. Additives are used for a variety of reasons.
They are added to food, for example, to enhance taste or color or toprevent spoilage. They are added to g
asoline to reduce the emission ofgreenhouse gases, and to plastics to enhance molding capability.
What are the most common types of additives?
The additives you are most likely to see on food labels are:
Antioxidants
Preservatives
Colors
Emulsifiers
Stabilizers
Gelling agents and thickeners
Flavor enhancers
Sweeteners
Admixture
Admixture is the materials which are added in cement mortar or concrete to improve their quality. Various
admixtures under different trade names are available in the market. The admixtures are uses for the
following purpose.
Improve the workability.
Retard setting action of the mortar and concrete.
Increase bond strength between reinforcement & concrete.
Reducing shrinkage during setting of mortar of concrete.
Reduce bleeding and segregation effect of concrete.
Types of Admixtures
Concrete admixtures are used to improve the behavior of concrete under a variety of conditions and are of
two main types: Chemical and Mineral.
Chemical Admixtures
Chemical admixtures reduce the cost of construction, modify properties of hardened concrete, ensure
quality of concrete during mixing/transporting/placing/curing, and overcome certain emergencies during
concrete operations.
Chemical admixtures are used to improve the quality of concrete during mixing, transporting, placement
and curing. They fall into the following categories:
air entrainers
water reducers
set retarders
set accelerators
super plasticizers
Specialty admixtures: which include corrosion inhibitors, shrinkage control, alkali-silica reactivity
inhibitors, and coloring.
