Purpose
The purpose of this document is to inform system administrators and implementers about Microsoft
Dynamics® SL 2018 Cumulative Update 2 and to guide them through the installation.

Before You Begin

Before you start the installation process, make sure that you read the Microsoft Dynamics SL Release 2018
Cumulative Update 2 Release Notes (ReleaseNotes2018CU2.pdf) document included with this cumulative
update. In addition, the “Planning Security” section of the Microsoft Dynamics SL Installation Guide Release
2018 CU1 is of particular importance to new sites.

Back up all Microsoft Dynamics SL databases before you continue. For more information, see “Backing Up
Databases” in the System Manager Help or user’s guide.

About This Cumulative Update

• Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) is a software update for Microsoft Dynamics SL
2018 CU1. Do not install this cumulative update on a computer that is running a release prior to Microsoft
Dynamics SL 2018 CU1. Make sure that you determine which version is currently installed before you start
the cumulative update installation. “Installing Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 Cumulative Update 2” on page
16 gives you the steps to verify your version.
– If you currently have Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU1 installed, read the rest of this section, and then
see “Updating an Existing Installation” on page 16.
– If you do not have Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU1 installed, read the rest of this section, and then
see “Creating a New Installation” on page 5.
• This cumulative update is compatible with the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server®:
– Microsoft SQL Server® 2014 or later versions, Standard or Enterprise Edition
– Microsoft SQL Server® 2016 or later versions, Standard or Enterprise Edition
– Microsoft SQL Server® 2017 or later versions, Standard or Enterprise Edition
• This service pack is compatible with the following operating systems:
– Microsoft Windows® 10 or later versions
– Windows Server® 2012 R2 or later versions
– Windows Server® 2016 or later versions
– Windows Server® 2019 Standard or later versions
• For more information about compatibility, see the Microsoft Dynamics SL System Requirements.
• Files that apply to both server and client workstations are included in this cumulative update. Therefore,
any existing client workstations must be updated with the new Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU2 client
files before you can run Microsoft Dynamics SL. See “Updating Client Workstations” on page 25.

Note: The procedure to update clients differs from service packs before Microsoft Dynamics SL 2015. Make
sure that you read “Updating Client Workstations” on page 25 carefully before you continue. If the server has a
client installed on it, the installation process updates the server’s client automatically.

3 of 27
• Make sure that you have the installation package available if you have to install Microsoft Dynamics SL
2018 CU1, and printed copies of the Microsoft Dynamics SL Installation Guide Release 2018 CU1 and
instructions for any supporting products that you plan to install.
• When you install Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU2 over an existing installation, files overwrite the
corresponding Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU1 version of the files. For example, the Microsoft Dynamics
SL 2018 CU2 version of 0101000.exe overwrites the existing version of 0101000.exe.
• This cumulative update affects the following features:
Accounts Payable

Advanced Payroll

Flexible Billings

General Ledger

Payroll

Project Controller

Quick Query

Requisitions

Service Contracts

Time and Expense for Projects

• If you add a new Microsoft Dynamics SL client to your system after you install Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018
CU2 on the server, you will also have to install the cumulative update on the client computer. When you
installed Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU2 on the server, the workstation components on the server were
updated.

Creating New Databases
A Microsoft Dynamics SL application database contains all the accounting data for a single financial entity or
group of related financial entities. A system database contains shared, site-specific data such as database
field attributes, edit characteristics, product registrations, customizations, and screen-level security.
You must set up a working application database (also known as a production or empty database) and a system
database before you can start to enter business data.
In Database Maintenance (98.290.00), you can create databases based on the following scenarios:
• Empty Databases — Use this scenario to create a new system database and a new application database.
• Demo – Business Ready Editions — Use this scenario to create system and application databases for
demonstrating the Business Ready Edition features based on the software package that you chose—either
Business Essentials or Advanced Management—when you installed Microsoft Dynamics SL. For more
information, see the “Which Microsoft Dynamics SL edition should I install?” topic in the Microsoft
Dynamics SL Installation Guide Release 2018 CU1.
• Demo – Professional Edition — Use this scenario to create a database for demonstrating the Professional
Edition features. This scenario includes demonstration data for the Financial Management, Inventory and
Order Processing, Manufacturing, Field Service Management, and Project Management and Accounting
modules. It also includes Multi-Company support.
• Demo – Standard Edition — Use this scenario to create a single-company database for demonstrating the
Standard Edition features. This scenario contains only Financial Management data.
• Additional Empty Application Database — Use this scenario to create an additional application database for
use with an existing system database.
To create databases:
These procedures must be performed by a Microsoft Dynamics SL system administrator.
Before you start the following steps, make sure that the Authentication Mode for SQL Server is set to Mixed
Mode on the database server. For more information, see the MSDN topic “Change Server Authentication
Mode”.

1. Confirm that the SQL Server service is running. Restart it if it is necessary. For more information about
starting SQL Server services, see the following MSDN topic:
“Start, Stop, Pause, Resume, Restart the Database Engine, SQL Server Agent, or SQL Server Browser
Service”.

Using Database Maintenance
After you install the Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU2 files, you must complete a Database Maintenance
scenario.

Important:

• Back up all Microsoft Dynamics SL system databases and application databases before you begin the
following procedure.
• Before upgrading your databases, export the Microsoft Dynamics SL customizations to a .cst file so that
you can import the file into the upgraded database. See the Customization Manager Help or user’s guide
for information about how to export and import .cst files. It is also a good idea to print the code associated
with the customization by using the Visual Basic for Applications integrated development environment
(IDE).
• All records that you added to the Messages, Screen, or PVRec tables remain intact. If changes were made
to the database schema, you must verify that these changes are still in place after the update to Microsoft
Dynamics SL 2018 CU2 is finished.
To upgrade Microsoft Dynamics SL databases:
1. Confirm that the SQL Server service is running. Restart it if it is necessary. For more information about
starting SQL Server services, see the following MSDN topic:
“Start, Stop, Pause, Resume, Restart the Database Engine, SQL Server Agent, or SQL Server Browser
Service”.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/32660a02-e5a1-411a-9e57-7066ca459df6
2. In SQL Server Management Studio, connect to the database server as an administrator (sa or a user who
is a member of the sysadmin server role).
3. Create backups of the system databases and application databases. For more information, see SQL Server
Books Online.

appears.

5. On the Connect Server tab, type the Destination SQL Server Name.

20 of 27
6. Windows Authentication is the default security mode to access the instance of SQL Server. It is also the
recommended authentication mode. Click SQL Server Authentication if you prefer to use it, and then type
the SQL Server “sa” Login ID and Password for the instance of SQL Server where the databases are
located.
7. Click Connect to connect to the instance of SQL Server. When the status bar at the bottom of the screen
indicates that you have connected to the instance of SQL Server, click the Update Databases tab.

8. Select the system database name from the System Database Name list.
9. In Update Scenario, notice that the correct scenario was selected by default based on the system
database name that you selected.
10. In Databases, select one or more application databases associated with the system database specified in
step 8.
11. Click Update Database to apply the update to your databases. If your database is SQL authenticated,
Authentication appears. If your database is Windows authenticated, go to step 14.

12. Select an authentication method, and then click Ok. Windows authentication is recommended. You should
be aware that if you change authentication methods after you set up users and groups, you must redo your
user and group setup.

21 of 27

13. Click Yes to confirm your selection and continue.

14. Follow these steps that apply to the authentication method that you selected.
• If you selected Windows Authentication:
a.) SYSADMIN Windows User Name appears.

b.) Click Ok to accept the default Microsoft Dynamics SL administrator, or make changes as needed,
and then click Ok. The database update process starts.

A user who is defined as an administrator automatically has access to all screens within Microsoft Dynamics
SL and becomes a member of the SQL Server sysadmin server role if the Grant this user permission to create
SQL Server logins and users check box is selected.

• If you selected SQL Server Authentication:

a.) In Confirm Password, type the password again.
b.) Login appears.

22 of 27
c.) In the Password box, type the password that was created for the Master80 user when the
Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018 CU1 databases were generated, and then click OK.
d.) Click Ok. The database update process starts.
SYSADMIN Login appears.

e.) Follow the instructions to specify a default user password in the Password box. The password
must satisfy the strong password requirements that are listed in the dialog box.

For more information about strong passwords, see the Microsoft Dynamics SL Security Guide.

15. When the update is complete, the 9829000 message box appears.

23 of 27
Note: If the update was unsuccessful, you will not see this message. Otherwise, a database update failure
message will appear.

16. Click OK.

17. In Database Maintenance (98.290.00), click Close.
18. Review the Dbbuild.log file that is typically found in the DB Maintenance Logs folder. By default, the folder
is created in the <SystemDrive>:\<user>\Documents\Microsoft Dynamics SL\DB Maintenance Logs\
folder. A successful database update results in a zero-byte Dbbuild.log file.

Using Database Update after Completing the Database Maintenance Scenario

After you complete a database maintenance scenario (see “Error! Reference source not found.” on page Error!
Bookmark not defined.), you must use Database Update (98.100.00) to populate the system database with
current system data.

Note: Populating the Screen table and the RPTControl table occurs during database creation (databases are
created by using Database Maintenance (98.290.00)). The Screen.csv file and the rptcontrol.csv file are no
longer a part of Database Update (98.100.00).

To use Database Update (98.100.00):

Technical Details
Registered Files
Setup updates several registered files. Before the file copy process starts, Setup un-registers the Microsoft
Dynamics SL 2018 CU1 version of these files. After Setup copies the new Microsoft Dynamics SL 2018
Cumulative Update 2 files to the appropriate directories, Setup registers each new file.

Global Assembly Cache

Setup updates assemblies that are in the global assembly cache (GAC). This contains assemblies that are
shared by several applications. Setup first removes an assembly from the cache, installs the updated file, and
then adds the new file to the GAC.

Silent Mode Installation Option

You have the option to run the installation of this cumulative update automatically. To install Microsoft
Dynamics SL 2018 Cumulative Update 2 in “silent mode,”
SL2018_CU2.exe –q –log <drive>\<path>\setup.log
After the installation is complete, check the Setup.log file to confirm that it finished successfully.
