Chapter 3 PMS

The document discusses planned maintenance systems (PMS) for ships. It explains that PMS is mandatory under international regulations. A PMS helps plan, perform, and document maintenance work. It then provides examples of computer-based PMS software and details 99 specific items that a PMS can cover, including maintenance of equipment, hull, tanks, machinery, and life saving appliances. Maintaining a PMS reduces breakdowns and helps ensure regulatory compliance.

Planned Maintenance System

A planned maintenance system is mandatory requirement by 'International Safety

Management Code'. PMS becomes mandatory by SOLAS convention and 'ISM Code'.
Planned maintenance system helps ship-owner, ship-operator to plan, perform and
document the maintenance work. There are more than one computer based planned
maintenance system available in the market. The name of these planned maintenance
system are AMOS-D, AMOS-S, SHIPMATE PMS and many more are existing in the global
market.

Sample of Planned maintenance system sheet, computer based

Ship planned maintenance system can cover maintenance of all part. It can provide
performance and record of all maintenance work. PMS is also helps in protection of assets.
The Planned maintenance system helps in doing safe and reliable maintenance work on
the ship and also to record it properly. Many of the planned maintenance system software's
are class approved. It is always good to use class approved planned maintenance system
so that it can be shown in statutory surveys where planned maintenance system inspection
is the part of survey. The compliance of planned maintenance system reduces incidental
break down of machineries and equipments therefore causing less incident, accidents.
Planned maintenance system can give reminders for incoming maintenance.

Hatch cover -Types

Purpose of Hatch Cover
Hatch cover provides closing arrangement to hatch opening. Various types of hatch
covers are designed by the manufacturers.

Simple Pontoon type Hatch Cover In Many Section

Simple pontoon hatch covers do not have hydraulic or electrohydraulic means of closing the
hatch cover. Hatch cover panels are the pontoon in rectangular shape, Breadth of these
pontoon snugly can fit with hatch coaming to close the section of hatch-opening.
4 or 6 sets of pontoon can close the hatch-opening completely. To open the hatch-cover
each pontoon are equipped with lifting eye. Cranes are used to lift the pontoon. Water tight
tarpaulin covering the entire size of hatch-opening provides weather tightness to hatch
opening.

MacGregor Hydraulic vertical folding Hatch Cover

MacGregor hydraulic vertical folding hatch covers are very advance hatch closing device.
MacGregor cover consists the two-hatch cover section(panel) connected to each other by
the hinges. Hatch cover consists wheel to move on track. Hydraulic piston (Ram) two
numbers jacks up to open the hatch cover. As the piston moves upward, hatch-cover
moves on wheel and finally stands at the edge of hatch opening exactly vertical.

MacGregor Side Rolling Hatch Cover

MacGregor side rolling hatch-covers consists hatch-cover panels connected with wheel,
thick driving chains and hydraulic driven sprocket or called pinion wheel operate the hatch
covers. These types of hatch-cover moves only horizontal and are designed either to move
side wise or forward and aft side.

Hatch Cover Cleats, Cross-Joint Wedge and Rubber Packing

MacGregor hatch-cover consists side cleats, cross wedge and rubber retaining channel
all round and also in centre joint. compression bar is also in the coaming. The purpose of
rubber packing is to provide weather-tightness. Cross-wedges and side cleats are used to
close tight and press the hatch cover with the resting coaming.

Planned Maintenance System on the Hatch-Covers

Hatch cover planned maintenance system is very important. Most of the ship follow to hatch
cover planned maintenance system. 'Planned maintenance system' of hatch cover may
consist following maintenance:

Planned Maintenance System for Inspection of Hatch Covers

Bimonthly inspection of hatch-cover may be the part of planned maintenance system.
Every month at the start and in the middle of month hatch-cover shall be checked
thoroughly
for the condition of hatch cover. Inspection of hatch cover will also include inspection of
wheel, hydraulic system, ram(pistons), driving chain, sprocket wheel , cleats, cross-wedges
each items must be checked thoroughly. if any wear and tear found then renewal, repair
shall be executed.
PMS for De-Rusting and Paintin g
Planned maintenance system might include the de-rusting, primer application and painting
on the hatch-cover on the 6montly basis. Six monthly each hatch cover shall be completely
derusted, panted.

PMS for Lubrication in all Lubrication Points

Planned maintenance shall include the lubrication interval and lubrication task. The interval
for such planned maintenance might be lubrication of all lubrication points on monthly basis.

PMS for Testing of Water-Tightness

Planned maintenance shall include the testing of hatch covers. The interval of such
maintenance might be kept on monthly basis.
In this test one or two person must stand inside cargo hold to examine the leakages if
present.
other person must hose down in each joint with adequate pressure. Hatch cover is fine only
if no leakages sighted at the end of hose test. Person on top of hatch cover also gives
signal to person inside of his location by tapping from small hammer on the hatch cover.

Planned maintenance for ultrasonic testin g

Planned maintenance system shall include ultrasonic testing of hatch cover. The interval of
such testing might be on annual basis. Ultrasonic testing provides thickness and condition
assessment of hatch covers. Single crystal or twin crystal ultrasonic gauge portable
apparatus can be used for this purpose. It generates ultrasonic waves of frequency 2
megahertz or another type might generate frequency of 5 megahertz. wave travel across
the metal plate and apparatus evaluate the thickness on basis of received signal frequency.
It is important to remove rust and use of gauge in location of smooth surface.
