INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY
Living in this world we are somewhat related and have effects upon
each other. Ancient people have concept of social interaction and social
analysis. In history we have many evidences that concept of social
analysis exist in people. This has common origins with old WESTREN
PHILOSPHOY and has been carried out as far as the time of PLATO.
Ancient philosophers like CONFUCIUS have also described importance
of social surveys in his writings. The evidence of sociological study exists
in the medieval Arab writings. Many sources consider IBN KHALDUN as
first sociologist and his book MUQADDIMAH is considered as first step
to sociology.
The word “sociology” was first used by a French EMMANUAL-JOSEPH
SIEYES in his unpublished manuscript. Then sociology was later defined
by AUGUSTE COMTE, as “systematic study of society”.
Similarly MAX WEBER defined sociology as “science of social action”.
According to EMILE DURKHEIM sociology is the “study of social
institutions”.
Depending upon the thinking perspectives there could be many
definations of sociology but generally it could be defined as “ A social
science that studies the,
1. The processes and patterns of human individual and group
interactions.
2. The forms of organizations of social groups and relationships
among them.
3. Influences of groups on individual behavior and vise versa.
4. The interaction among one social group and the other.
