This materials are based on the purpose of providing English speaking materials for
the second semester students of the Nursing Department based on analysis of the
student needs. The six units of this book along with its tasks, namely Working in the
Hospital, I am a Nurse, Vital Signs, Patients Admission, Visiting the Patients and
Answering the Call, are compiled based on Task-Based Language Teaching. There are
three main parts in each unit, namely introduction, main activity and reinforcement.
Introduction explains the teaching goals of the unit. Main activity contains input which is
followed by activities for practicing the lesson, to make sure the learners understand the
lesson. Reinforcement has purpose to make students be able to learn about things that
they just learned in the class.

This materials are the result of the long study through the process of; needs
analysis, formulating the course grids, developing the first draft, expert judgement,
formulating the final draft, small try-out, large try-out and evaluation. Regarding the
completion of developing this materials, I would like to express my gratitude to various
parties who have provided supports during the developing process. I wise up that this
materials are far from perfect, so the inputs from various parties, especially the users of
this teaching materials are needed for the improvement. Hopefully, this teaching materials
provide benefits for nursing students.

Task 4
Read the following text and answer the questions.

Blood Pressure
There are two types of blood pressure
which are systolic and diastolic. Systolic blood
pressure refers to the pressure inside your
arteries when your heart is pumping.
Meanwhile, diastolic pressure is the pressure
inside your arteries when your heart is resting
between beats. When your arteries are healthy
and dilated, blood flows easily and your heart
doesn't have to work too hard. However, when
your arteries are too narrow or stiff, blood pressure rises, the heart gets overworked, and
arteries can become damaged.
Blood pressure is measured with an instrument called sphygmomanometer. First,
a cuff is placed around your arm and inflated with a pump until the circulation is cut off. A
small valve slowly deflates the cuff, and the doctor measuring blood pressure uses a
stethoscope, placed over your arm, to listen for the sound of blood pulsing through the
arteries. That first sound of rushing blood refers to the systolic blood pressure; once the
sound fades, the second number indicates the diastolic pressure, the blood pressure of
your heart at rest.
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and recorded with
the systolic number first, followed by the diastolic number. For example, a normal blood
pressure would be recorded as something under 120/80 mm Hg.
Blood pressure can be affected by factors like:
 Smoking
 Coffee or other caffeinated drinks
 A full bladder
 Recent physical activity
Blood pressure is also affected by your emotional state and the time of day. Since so
many factors that can affect blood pressure readings, you should have your blood
pressure taken several times to get an accurate measurement.

Study the following explanation of polite request

In medical practices, the nurse always gives some instructions to the patients
when they will do particular medical activities. The instructions such as: Could I check
your vital signs, first? Or Would you mind lying on the bed? In grammatical terms, this
instruction is categorized as polite request.
Polite request is a polite sentence which is used when we want to ask for a help or
to ask permission. In English, the polite request is in the form of an interrogative
sentence that starts with a modal verb.

1. Asking for permission

Can/Could/May/Might + I + bare infinitive +/- complement?
Example:
Could you stand up?
Could you sit on this chair?
May I check your blood pressure now?
2. Asking for assistance
Can/Could/Will/Would + you (please) + bare infinitive +/- complement?
or

Would + you mind + gerund (verb + ing)/- complement?

Example:
Could you roll up your sleeve, please?
Would you bend your back, please?
Would you mind lying down on the bed?

Task 7
Circle the appropriate word to complete the sentence.
1. I will take your blood pressure. Would you mind (give/giving) your arm?
2. Mrs. Anna, your temperature is normal. It is 36 0 C. Everything is normal. Could

3. Could you (stand/standing) on the scale?
4. Could you (keep/keeping) your eyes close?

breathing out) deeply?

Task 8
Make 6 polite expressions related to medical setting by using the following words.

Task 9
Observation Chart
One of the most important aspects to asses the patient is taking the vital signs. In
many hospitals, they are being checked for every four hours. Meanwhile, for the patient
in Intensive Care Unit, the signs are being checked more frequently. Changes in any vital
signs can indicate major or minor changes of the patient’s health/condition. In order to
keep the data, the nurse has to fill the observation chart as in the example below.

Study the following explanation of Yes/No and WH-Questions

In the patient admission, the nurse or the medical officer usually delivers some
questions to dig the patient’s information in order to give an appropriate health care support.
Some of the questions are about the personal identity. The questions asked are in form of
Yes/No and WH Questions.
41

Yes/No Questions
Yes/No questions are also called as closed questions because there are only two
possible responses: Yes or No. When forming a Yes/No question, the sentence must
include auxiliary verbs, such as: be, do, have, or a modal verb. It is impossible to ask
a Yes/No question without one of these verbs.

Here are the examples of Yes/No questions in the sentences.

Questions Responses
Are you a nurse? Yes/No.
Yes I am/No, I am not.
Yes I am a nurse/No, I am not a

WH questions are so called because with the exception of the question word How, all
the question words begin with the letter W. They are also called as open questions because
the number of possible responses is limitless. This means they must be answered with
more information than just a simple “yes” or “no.” Here are the WH-questions words.

Your Hospital Stay

During the hospitalized time, the patient or the family has to pay attention to such
things that are permitted and forbidden during the stay.

What to Bring

You are welcome to bring personal items such as reading glasses, books,
photographs, portable music system, or anything that would make you more comfortable.
However, we ask that you must limit your personal items because there is a limited amount
of space for personal items in the patients' rooms. The hospital provides the following, but if
you would like your own, feel free to bring hospital gowns and socks and also toiletries (e.g,
comb, brush, shampoo, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste).

What Not to Bring

Electrical appliances from home are not permitted. Special permission may be granted in
some instances. Then, the use of cell phone is not permitted anywhere near the patient
care units. Next, please leave all the valuables at home, items such as jewelry, expensive
clothing, or other costly items. The hospital is not responsible for the loss or the damage to
any personal property kept in your room. The hospital also asks the patient to not receive
any perishable food from the visitor. However, the home-cooked meals that will be eaten
immediately are permitted. But do remember to first check with your doctor to find out about
any diet restrictions related to your condition or your treatment.
