INTRODUCTION TO MARIAM LINOTYPE
Mariam was designed by the famous Arabic type designer Ismet Chanbour, who also designed Al Harf
Al Jadid -another highly successful typeface from the Linotype Library, Mariam is a modern headline
typeface and was produced in PostScript font format by Linotype-Hell in 1992. Ismet Chanbour has
perhaps more experience than any other designer of this style of compact ultra-heavy Arabic, and
Mariam provides a welcome addition to the range of headline faces available in Linotype PostScript
Arabic Typeface Library.
Mariam is characterized by certain design features which contribute to its stylistically lively, yet
graceful appearance: downward-pointing tails combining with the swinging finial strokes of certain
characters, and the various 'cut-away' effects, This headline face successfully offers a wide range of
applications, from very large, bold poster-size work to use at 18 point for emphasis in text work.
Mariam is a Trademark of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, which may be registered in certain
jurisdictions, exclusively licensed through Linotype Library GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG.

OpenType “.otf ” fonts are compact single-file cross-platform fonts, which can have extended language
support based on Unicode, and enhanced typographic layout features. For OpenType information,

OPENTYPE FEATURE HIGHLIGHTS
The most prominent OpenType layout features in these fonts are: Arabic/Hindi/Farsi digits, Farsi
specific letters, standard ligatures and mark positioning.
Note that the choice of which OpenType features are supported is specific to each application.

MAC OS LANGUAGE SUPPORT
On Mac OS 9.x only the MacRoman encoding is supported for OpenType font. Therefore support for
Arabic and Farsi will be available only in Adobe ME applications. For this reason you have to install
the fonts (the 2 .otf files) in Adobe font folder : HD\Application Support\Adobe\Fonts.
Mac OSX.1.5 is still not supporting Arabic. This support should be available in future Mac OSX
releases.
