Geotechnical Engineering 5

This document discusses shear strength of soils and contains information about geotechnical engineering, shear stresses, normal stresses, and direct shear tests. It includes 10 situations describing states of stress with questions about determining principal stresses, maximum shear, and stresses on specific planes. It also describes a direct shear test involving shear box tests on soil with varying normal loads and measured shear forces at failure, asking questions to determine cohesion and friction angle values.

Geotechnical Engineering 5- Shear Strength of Soil (Part 1)

24.01 Stresses in a Soil Mass 10. Determine the Normal and Shear Stresses on ABCD.

SITUATION 1 SITUATION 4
For the State of Stress as shown. In the experiment as shown below, it is known that the
specimen fails on plane AB when the shear stress reaches
15 kPa at the corresponding Normal Stress of 6 kPa.

1. Determine the Major Principal Stress.

2. Determine the Minor Principal Stress.
3. Show the location of Major Principal Plane.
4. Show the location of Minor Principal Plane.
5. Determine the Maximum Shear.
6. Show the location of Plane with Maximum shear.
7. Determine the Normal Stress on 30 deg. Shaded Plane. 11. Determine the value of P to cause failure of sample.
8. Determine the Shear Stress on 30 deg. Shaded Plane. 12. Determine the angle of Failure Plane.

SITUATION 2
For the state of stress as shown. 24.02 Direct Shear Test
SITUATION 1
A series of undrained shear box test ( area of box= 400
sq.mm were carried out on soil with the following results.

Normal Load (N) Shear Force at

Failure (N)
95 72
188 96
270 120
300 128
9. Determine the Normal and Shear Stress on 30 deg.
1. Determine the cohesion with respect to total stresses
Plane.
2. Determine the angle of friction.
SITUATION 3.
For the state of stress as shown.
3. If 500 N of Normal Load is used , what shear force is
needed to cause failure?
