EES 612 - Electric Machine and Actuators Fall 2019 Assignment #2

The document contains two assignments involving electromagnets. The first asks the reader to: draw the magnetic circuit, calculate the current needed for a given flux density, find the resulting flux density in the second gap, and calculate the closing forces. The answers given are: 2.0 A, 0.5 T, 80 N, and 20 N. The second assignment involves an electromagnet designed to lift weights. It asks the reader to: draw the magnetic circuit, calculate the minimum air gap length before saturation, find the attractive force, calculate the inductance, and find the permeability. The answers provided are: 2.14 mm, 125440 N, 13.44 H, 0.007 H/m

EES 612 – Electric Machine and Actuators

Fall 2019
Assignment #2

1. The electromagnet shown below is made of a ferromagnetic material with µr = 5000, and of a
two-coil winding. The mean lengths ab, dc, af, ed, and ad are all approximately equal to 80.0 mm.
The cross-sectional area of the middle leg is 400 mm2, and the area of all other cross sections is
200 mm2. The air gaps have the lengths lg1 = 1.0 mm and lg2 = 2.0 mm, and the fringing of the
magnetic field can be ignored. The permeability of vacuum is approximately equal to µ0 =
1/800,000 [H/m].
a) Draw the detailed and simplified magnetic circuit equivalents of the structure (no
numerical values).
b) Find the current i that is required to establish a flux density of Bg1 = 1.0 T in the left-
hand side air gap, if N1 = 500 and N2 = 100.
c) Calculate the flux density Bg2 of the right-hand side air gap, for the condition (b).
d) Find the forces F1 and F2 trying to close the gaps, for the condition (b).
For any of the above, clearly state any assumptions that you may have made.
Answers: b) 2.0 A, c) 0.5 T, d) F1 = 80 N, F2 = 20 N.

2. The electromagnet of Figure 1 is designed to lift weights. It has a 600-turn coil and a
ferromagnetic core that is made of Silicon Sheet Steel, whose B - H curve, as Figure 2 shows,
exhibits a large constant slope for flux densities up to 0.7 T (beyond this flux density, the material
gets saturated and the B - H curve shows nonlinearity). The coil carries a current of i = 4.0 A. The
permeability of vacuum is approximately equal to µ0 = 1/800,000 [H/m]. The fringing of the
magnetic field can be ignored.
a) Draw a detailed or a simplified magnetic circuit equivalent for the structure (no
numerical values).
b) Calculate the minimum length of the air gap before the core is saturated.
c) Calculate the force F attracting the moveable member, for the condition (b).
d) Calculate the inductances of the coil for the condition (b).
e) Calculate the permeability µ and the relative permeability µr of an unsaturated core.
For any of the above, clearly state any assumptions that you may have made.
Answers: b) 2.14 mm, c) 125440 N, d) 13.44 H, e) µ = 0.007 H/m, µr = 5600.
