History Source Credibility Analysis

Dr. Robert B. Fox is the primary source between the two readings. As the leader of the archaeological excavation of the Tabon Caves from 1962-1966, he provided firsthand evidence of the earliest known human remains in the Philippines through his discovery of the Tabon Man fossils. William Henry Scott is the secondary source, as his 1984 work compiled and interpreted existing research, making references to other experts. While both sources provide useful information, Dr. Fox is considered more credible as an eyewitness and anthropologist who directly studied the Tabon Man communities through excavation.

Activity 1- Comparative Analysis

A. Which is the primary source and the secondary source between the two
readings?
 Primary source —Robert B. Fox. The Tabon Caves: Archaeological
Explorations and Excavations on Palawan Islands, Philippines (Manilla, 1970)
p. 40.
 The work of Dr. Robert B. Fox, serves as an eyewitness as he led his team
from the National Museum of the Philippines to research the Tabon Caves
between the year 1962 and 1966 which validates his work as an original
document or piece of scholarly material that was created at the time of the actual
events or within its time period. Furthermore, his work also resulted to the
excavation of the Tabon Man’s scattered fossils which became an effective
source that provided firsthand evidence about the earliest known human remains
in the Philippines.

 Secondary source —William Henry Scott. Prehispanic Source Materials for

the Study of Philippine History (Revised History) (Quezon City, 1984), pp. 14-
15
 The work of William Henry Scott is practically a collection of essays that deals
with various topics regarding the prehistory of the Philippines. His work was also
dated around 1984 which makes his writings seem more informative because it
includes a lot of scientific facts about the topic by referencing from previous
published works of other physical anthropologists as evidenced by quoting “two
experts have given a further opinion…” Furthermore, he also includes
commentaries and scenarios on how the Tabon man would dressed decently in
order to blend in at our current society. This form of writing adds his personal
interpretation and spin in discussing the existing body of knowledge regarding the
Tabon man.

B. Do a credibility analysis of the sources. Who between the authors is more

credible to talk about the topic?

Dr. Robert B. Fox William Henry Scott

 Dates back to 1970.  Dates back to 1984.
 Anthropologist and Historian.  Historian.
 The head of the Anthropology  Created a revised history
Division of the National Museum written based from previous
of the Philippines which led a researches on Prehispanic
six-year archaeological research source materials which makes
project in Palawan that it an informative summary of
discovered the Tabon man.   findings regarding the Tabon
man.

Primary and secondary sources must complement each other to help the readers
build a convincing argument and deeper understanding on a certain
topic. However, primary sources are more credible as evidence to the existing
topic, especially when it talks about historical evidences in anthropology which
requires the expertise of an anthropologist. Hence, this gives merit to the works
of Dr. Robert B. Fox, which is an anthropologist that studies communities by
living or collecting data firsthand, as a more credible source provider because Dr.
Fox, himself, discovered the Tabon Man. In comparison with William Scott which is
a historian that studies history and is likely to perform his research in public libraries
and museums by examining private document collections from primary sources
such as from Dr. Robert B. Fox.
