Short Bond Paper. (8x5 40 PTS) : I. ESSAY: Answer The Following Questions Below. Write Your Answer On Separate Sheets of

This document discusses different forms of assessment used in mathematics classes. It compares formative and summative assessment, noting that formative assessment provides ongoing feedback while summative assessment evaluates learning after a block of work. Traditional assessment evaluates learning retention and allows performance comparison, while multiple choice tests are commonly used in math classes due to being fast, easy to score, and reducing guessing. Performance tasks in authentic assessment measure 21st century skills like problem solving by requiring original responses rather than recognition. Authentic assessment uses real-world tasks measured by field performance criteria, but challenges include lack of student seriousness. Portfolio assessment reflects student performance over time and encourages responsibility, aiding differentiation and observation of mathematical processing.

I. ESSAY: Answer the following questions below.

Write your answer on separate sheets of

short bond paper. (8x5=40 pts)
1. Discuss the difference between formative and summative assessment.
̶ Formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback
that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to
improve their learning. Summative assessment takes place after pupils have
completed a block of work, whether that be on a term or modular basis. They are
a more formal way to sum up pupil progress.
2. What are the advantages of using traditional assessment?
̶ Traditional assessment evaluates the learning and retaining capacity of a child. It
analyses how much of the provided material or syllabus has been acquired by the
student. It also helps educators or teachers to compare the performances of
different students.
3. Which traditional assessment tool do you usually see used in mathematics classes? Why
do you think is it popular in assessing mathematics learning?
̶ I usually see mathematics classes used multiple-choice test. It is popular in
assessing mathematics learning because it is fast, easy, and economical to score. It
reduces the chances of the learners guessing the correct items.
4. How do performance tasks assess the achievement of 21st century goals?
̶ Performance tasks assess the achievement of 21st century goals by allowing
students to construct or perform an original response rather than just recognizing a
potentially right answer out of a list provided, performance assessments can
measure student’s cognitive thinking and reasoning skills and their ability to
apply knowledge to solve realistic, meaningful problems.
5. What elements of the authentic assessment measures make it better than traditional
assessment? Why?
̶ The learners are asked to perform real-world tasks and the criteria are based on
actual performance in the field of work.
6. What are the possible challenges in the use of any form of authentic assessment? Why?
̶ Students may have difficulty taking the assessments seriously and putting forth
best efforts.
7. How does each part of a portfolio contribute to the assessment of student learning?
̶ Portfolio assessment enables students to reflect their real performance to show
their weak and strong domain and to observe student’s progress during the
learning process, and encourages students to take responsibilities for their own
learning.
8. Does portfolio assessment contribute to better appreciation of mathematics? How about its
contribution to mathematics achievement?
̶ The portfolio assessment including open-ended questions can aid teachers in
observing how students process mathematics information and also help
differentiate the skill levels of individual students.
