REFLECTIVE JOURNAL NO. 1
“Observation of the Teaching-learning Process in Flexible Learning”
Name: ALJUN PINACA Date: AUGUST 10, 2021
Course/Major Field: BESED-MATHEMATICS Cooperating Teacher: FELIPE SUCUANO
1. Describe the Distance Learning Delivery that you observed. Explain how it differs from the
traditional teaching-learning process before the Pandemic.
In this time of pandemic, there are many changes in basic education in the
Philippines. Traditional learning, where learning takes place in a classroom setting is not
possible currently. To continue deliver quality, accessible, relevant, and liberating
education, DepEd developed the Basic Education Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) where
learning delivers in different learning delivery and in safe manner.
One of the learning delivery modalities that schools adopt is distance learning. It is a
learning delivery modality where learning takes place between the teacher and the learners
who are geographically remote from each other during instruction. This modality has three
types: Modular Distance Learning (MDL), Online Distance Learning (ODL), and
TV/Radio-Based Instruction.
In traditional face-to-face learning, students and the teacher are both physically
present in the classroom, and there are opportunities for active engagement, immediate
feedback, and socio-emotional development of learners but now it was not possible. The
first modality that DepEd adopt is modular distance learning where learners use selflearning
modules (SLMs) in print or digital format/electronic copy. The teacher takes the
responsibility of monitoring the progress of the learners. The learners may ask assistance
from the teacher via e-mail, telephone, text message/instant messaging, etc. Where
possible, the teacher shall do home visits to learners needing remediation or assistance. Any
member of the family or other stakeholder in the community needs to serve as parateachers.
Second is online distance learning where the teacher is facilitator, engage learners’ active
participation using various technologies accessed through the internet. Online learning
allows live synchronous instruction. It requires participants to have good and stable internet
connection. For me, it is more interactive than the other types of distance learning. Lastly
the TV/Radio-Based Instruction where it utilizes SLMs converted to video lessons for
Television-Based Instruction and SLMs converted to radio script for radiobased instruction.

2. Express the impact of the Distance Learning Delivery that you observed on your personal
teaching philosophy.
As secondary teacher, my personal teaching philosophy focusses on pedagogical content
knowledge. To understand of what is to be taught, learned, and assessed, an understanding
of how learners learn, an understanding of ways to facilitate effective learning, and an
understanding of how to blend content and pedagogy to organize topics for learners. Being
experts in pedagogical content knowledge was enough for the learning of my students in
this time of crisis. As teacher my personal philosophies can respond effectively in distance
learning approach. I found that when students are given support to find out how things
work, to make things work, and to create and express themselves they will have better
chances to develop technological capability. Teachers as more knowledgeable and
technically competent can assist student development through intervention and modelling
of ideas and skills and thus accelerate students' acquisition of ways of representing
meaning. I must make sure that the quality of learning remains even with the absence of
face-to-face interactions.
3. Based on your interview, what preparations shall a newly-hired teacher need to be efficient
in the new normal?
Based on my interview with Teacher Elizabet Gayo, the preparations of a newly
hired teacher that need to be efficient in the new normal are skill to thrive the new normal,
the digital skill. Teachers of new normal must equip with digital skills because it is
necessary for teachers to help their students become a digital citizen. According to Teacher
Elizabeth it is the teacher’s responsibility to guide the students regarding which sources use
to get the information they needed in the specific topic. Being digitally literate teacher can
also inspire student to have an all knowledge in software, which is very relevant and timely.
For me, when we offer our students a technology tools, we also open the door to the
universe. It is east for them to learn anytime about anything. It is a way of learning beyond
the walls of a classroom which help student a chance to learn and share knowledge.
