THE RESEARCH GAP

One factor that contributes in the growth and development of the culture of our

country is when we enrich and preserve them particularly when it comes to folk dances.

Know how they originated as for where are these dances located. Various places, artifacts,

websites, and journals may provide information regarding such folk dances. Upon checking

the related literatures about the nature and background of Oasioas, another Pangasinan

folk dance, the researcher noticed that there are adequate or sufficient information in the

Philippines about these cultural dances positively affect the country's growth and

development same with how these empower the culture and traditions of certain places

where they are located respectively. There are articles or study folk dances in the country

but its mere focus is more defining the nature of the dances as well as explaining how the

dance goes or the essence. Other articles otherwise were only able to mention few to little

information about the said folk dance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to know the nature and background of Oasioas, another Pangasinan

folk dance. Other than that, having adequate information about the said folk dance aims to

empower the readers to be knowledgeable about present and existing folk dance in the

country.

This study aims to seek for answers to the following questions:

Q1. What is Oasoias?

Q2. On what place does this dance originated?

Q3. What is the nature of the dance?

Q4. What other additional information about Oasioas can be added?

DEFINITION OF TERMS

OASIOAS is a type of dance in the Philippines similar to the Pandanggo sa Ilaw, and is

typically performed by fishermen to celebrate a bountiful catch. In Pandanggo

Oasiwas folk dance, the lamps are placed in cloths or nets and swung around as the

dancers circle and sway. (zenrooms.com)

LINGAYEN officially the Municipality of Lingayen, is a 1st class municipality and

capital of the province of Pangasinan, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it

has a population of 103,278 people. It is the capital and the seat of government of

the province of Pangasinan. (Wikipedia.com)

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study particularly its findings would be beneficial to the following:

STUDENTS TAKING UP PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAJOR

This paper can give them ideas about folk dances particularly their nature and

background.

TEACHERS

The educators would benefit a lot with this paper because they can use it towards

teaching.

FOLK DANCERS

This study would give them a greater insight about other existing dances out there

and they will have a wide variety of information regarding the dance too.

DANCE INSTRUCTORS

Dance instructors can use this information so they will know the proper stance and

the limitations when it comes to choreography. They can also use the information

for future reference.

RESEARCHERS

When it comes to the gaps in the folk dances regarding Oasioas, this paper may

enlighten them.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS

Future researchers can use this paper as a reference for their future studies that

they will be doing.

LIMITATIONS AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The researchers will focus on the nature and background of Oasioas, another

Pangasinan folk dance which is located particularly in Lingayen, Pangasinan. The priority is

to conduct the research by means of gathering information through web, in accordance to

the certain folk dance.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

As years passed by, Pangasinan folk dances are getting a grip of it again, by

empowering the local cultural events- one of that is folk dance. They do this in order to

empower and support their provincial government as they revive the dances in the last

three years, according to lawyer Verna Nava-Perez, the provincial board secretary and

dance director of the cultural group, Danggoan Pangasinan (Danggoan).

“Oasioas,” which originated from the capital town of Lingayen, Pangasinan, is folk

dance and also a celebration in accordance to fishermen’s good catch. The dancers use

lamps that are wrapped in net during the performance and they execute and perform the

dance in a graceful manner. The dance was originally a Spanish Fandango dance coming

from the fishing town of Lingayen in Pangasinan. They celebrate when they have a good

catch of fish and they celebrate by drinking and dancing subsequently accompanied by

swinging and circling of lighted lamps wrapped in net which are on the hands of the

dancers. The term ‘Oasiwas’ was derived from the graceful & lively moves of the dancers

gave the name which in the local dialect is known as ‘swinging‘.
