➢ There are two sections in this paper.
➢ Both Sections are compulsory.
➢ The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].

SECTION I [10 Marks]

(Attempt all the questions in this section)

(a) State four functions of a simple machine. [2]

(b) (i) To use a machine as a force multiplier what type of lever should preferably be used.
(ii) Draw a sketch of such a lever. [2]

(c) State the energy changes in the following cases while in use:
(i) An electric iron (ii) A ceiling fan. [2]

(d) How is work done by a force measured when the force

(i) is in the direction of displacement?
(ii) is at an angle to the direction of displacement? [2]
(e) Why is a jack screw provided with a long arm? [2]

SECTION II [10 Marks]

(Attempt all the questions in this section)

(a) (i) State the principle of conservation of energy.

(ii) Explain conservation of energy in a simple pendulum. [3]
(b) (i) What is a single fixed pulley. Give its one use.
(ii) Give two reasons why the efficiency of a single movable pulley system is not hundred
percent. [3]

(c) Pulley system with VR equal to 4 is used to lift a load of 2250 kgf through a vertical
height of 20 metre. The effort required is 750 kgf in the downward direction. g = 10 m/s2.
Calculate
i) Distance moved by the effort.
ii) Work done by the effort
iii) M.A. of the pulley system
iv) efficiency of the pulley system [4]
