Configuring an email server

Objective

 Connect end devices to a Cisco 2960 Switch


 Connect Cisco 2960 switch to servers
 Configure the mail and DNS service
 Configure the clients IP and mail details.

Background

A network designer is setting up an email server that stores and sends email messages to email clients on
request. Whenever the sender compose and send an email to another user, the message will go first to the
mail server. It’s the mail server then sends the email to the receiver.

Step 1: Build the network topology

a. Add two PCs, one mail server, one DNS server. All these devices connected to a Switch 2960 in
a star topology manner.

Step 2 : Configure IP addresses.
(8 marks)
Step 3 : Configure mail clients on the PCs and mail service on the generic server.

a. Mail Clients:

Click on PC0. Go to its Desktop tab, and click on Email. Configure the email client
by filling in the user, server and login information.

PC0 (name : client1, email address : [email protected], incoming/outgoing mail


server : mail.com, logon information(username :client1, password:cisco)

PC1 (name : client2, email address : [email protected], incoming/outgoing mail


server : mail.com, logon information(username :client2, password:cisco)
Email server:

Click on the server, then click Services tab, pick email server from the menu.

Provide the Domain name (mail.com) of the server.

Proceed to add both users and provide their passwords.

DNS server:

(3 marks)

Click DNS server, click Services tab, then pick DNS.

Turn the service ON. Set name-address pairs and add them to the server.
Step 4 : Test the email service.

(6 marks)

Go to PC0 email client, compose an email and send it to PC1 email address.

Check whether the email from PC0 is received on PC1.

On the email client of PC1, click on Receive.

Note : If everything is well set up, the email from PC0 will be well received on PC1.
