DAY 1. Types of Analogy

A. Mini-Lesson

Good day! Today, you will learn about analogy.

An Analogy shows the relationship or the common quality

between two sets of words.
An Analogy is the comparison through which the ideas or
things are compared to each other. Through analogy, the
things, which are different from each other, are compared. It
aims to explain the ideas or things by doing a comparison. It
is presented this way:
A : B :: C : D,
which is read as “A is to B as C is to D”.

To understand a word analogy, think about how the

words on each side of the colons relate to each
other. Sometimes the relationship is a part of the
whole, a change in size, a synonym or an antonym,
etc.

Example of Analogy:
kitten : cat :: puppy : dog
The colons (::) between cat and puppy stand for words, so
that when you read it aloud, the analogy says:
Kitten is to cat as puppy is to dog.

Relationship
A. Mini-Lesson

Cause and Effect Relationship. This analogy contains one

word that is the cause, or the source of some action or
condition, and another word that is the effect, or the result or
consequence.
14
Here is an example:
Earthquake : tsunami :: cavity : toothache

(What caused tsunami? The earthquake! And what caused

Branch : tree :: arm : man

(So what is the part and what is the whole? For the first pair, the
branch is the part and the tree is the whole. The second pair
maintains this relationship, as an arm is a part of a man.)

Characteristic Relationship. This analogy are those that check

for understanding about a characteristic that forms the
relationship between two words.

For example, a characteristic analogy may be something like

Bird : Air:: Fish : Water

(The analogy works because birds live in the air just as fish live
in the sea. From tests to mind-teasers, characteristic analogies
have a way of popping up in everyday life, and it is important to
know how to solve them.)

B. Guided Practice
Directions: Identify the relationship of the following group of words
(cause and effect, part to whole, or characteristic), then
justify by writing a statement.

Example: characteristic a. bird : air :: fish : water

Statement: Bird lives in the air as fish lives in the water.
_____________________1. Ant : tiny :: rabbit : soft

exploring connections between various parts of the human body.
Choose from the following words, some of which might be used more
than once.

Air arms blood feet hands

legs palms soles talons

16
As humans, it is easy to recognize the similarities among different
parts of our body. For example, we can see that our knees are to our
(1.)_____________ as our elbows are to our (2.)________________ ,
and that our toes are to our (3.)____________ as our fingers are to our
(4.)___________ . While it may be a little harder, we can see that the
fleshy part of our hands, the (5.)_____________ , are similar to the
fleshy part of our feet, the (6.)___________ , and that our lungs process
(7.) ___________as our hearts process (8.)_____________ .
These analogies are based on how parts of the body work.
Another kind of analogy could be based on similarities between
humans and animals. For example, toenails protect humans’ (9.)
______________as (10.)_______________ protect birds’ feet. And in
some senses, eyebrows work for humans as antennae work for insects.
At least they grow from similar parts of the body.
