Quarter 3 – Module 2b:
Representing Fractions Using Regions,
Sets, and the Number Lines
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Grade 3-Mathematics Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Representing Fractions using regions, sets, and number lines!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints
in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to
help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will
help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage
and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

Welcome to the Grade 3-Mathematics Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Representing Fractions using regions, sets and number lines!

ii
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being
an active learner.
This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

you link the current lesson with the
previous one.

What’s New
In this portion, the new lesson will
be introduced to you in various
ways such as a story, a song, a
poem, a problem opener, an activity
or a situation.

What is It This section provides a brief

discussion of the lesson. This aims
to help you discover and understand
new concepts and skills.

sentence/paragraph to be filled in to
process what you learned from the
lesson.

What I Can Do This section provides an activity

which will help you transfer your
new knowledge or skill into real life
situations or concerns.

Assessment This is a task which aims to evaluate

your level of mastery in achieving
the learning competency.

Additional Activities In this portion, another activity will

be given to you to enrich your
knowledge or skill of the lesson
learned.

activities in the module.

At the end of this module you will also find:

References This is a list of all sources used in

developing this module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

iv
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of
the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other
activities included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with
it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you
are not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it.

v
What I Need to Know

This module was created to help you represent fractions. This module
allows to be used in several learning situations. The language used recognizes
the diverse vocabulary level of pupils. The lectures are sequenced to follow the
requirement of the course. The direction in which you read can be differentiated
to match with the textbook you are now using.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Represent fractions using regions, sets, and number lines.

Enjoy your journey. Good luck!

What I Know

Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate
sheet of paper.
1. Look at the illustration. What is the fraction with an X?
a. 1/2
b. 1/4
c. 2/4 x
d. 1/3

2. What fraction is shown by the shaded objects?

a. 1/2
b. 2/8
c. 3/6
d. 1/4

3. What fraction is shown by the shaded figure?

a. 2/4
b. 1/3
c. 1/4
d. 1/2

4. What fraction is shown by the number line?

a. 1/4
b. 4/2
c. 2/4
4. 1/3

2
Represent Fractions using region,
Lesson sets, and number lines.
In this lesson, you are going to learn the skill on representing fractions. In
this module you will see different illustrations showing fractions. Fractions
represent equal parts of a whole or a collection. It has “numerator” and
“denominator”. Numerator is the number of equal parts shaded. Denominator
is the number of equal parts in a whole or collection. When the parts of a whole
are not evenly divided, they don`t form fractions. Further, there are three
different representations of fractions: i. regions, ii. sets, iii. number lines.
You just have to enjoy and follow directions properly so that you will
completely learn the lesson.

What’s In
Before going further, let us try to review first your previous learning regarding
fractions.
With the following illustrations, write the fraction of each
illustration.

What’s New

Activity 1
A. Maria has one whole sheet of paper, she wanted to fold it into four equal
parts. She cut one part of it.
1. In how many equal parts did Maria fold the whole sheet of paper?
_____________
2. How many equal parts of the paper did Maria cut? _________
3. What fraction of the paper did she cut? ______________
B. Ruchu divided his cake into 6 slices and shared 3 of it with his classmates.
1. In how many equal parts did Ruchu sliced the whole piece of cake?
_______________
2. How many equal parts of the cake did Ruchu shared? ______
3. What fraction of the cake did he shared? ________

Are you ready

to proceed to your
new lesson?

What is It
A. Representing fractions using regions
Figure A.

Figure A shows 3/6, where 3 (shaded part) is

called numerator and 6 (equal parts of a whole) is called denominator;
Figure B.

B shows 12/24, where 12 (shaded part) as

numerator and 24 (equal parts of a whole) as denominator;
Figure C.

and figure C shows 2/5, where 2

(shaded part) is called numerator and 5 (equal parts of a whole) is called
B. Representing fractions using sets
There are 8 triangles in a set and 3 of
them are shaded. Thus the fraction for
the shaded part is 3/8.
C. Representing fractions using number lines

How many equal parts do the number line have?

How many of the equal parts in the number line are marked?

What fraction of the number line has been marked?
