INSTRUMENTS
An anemometer is an instrument used to
measure the speed or velocity of gases
either in a contained flow, such as airflow in a
duct, or in unconfined flows, such as
ANEMOMETER atmospheric wind. To determine the velocity,
an anemometer detects change in some
physical property of the fluid or the effect of
the fluid on a mechanical device inserted into
the flow.
Hygrometer, instrument used in
meteorological science to measure
the humidity, or amount of water vapour in
HYGROMETER the air. Also known as a humidity meter or
humidity gauge, hygrometers measure the
amount of moisture in a specific
environment. It does this by calculating
changes in pressure and temperature.
Device for measuring some characteristics of
a liquid, such as its density (weight per unit
volume) or specific gravity (weight per unit
volume compared with water). The device
HYDROMETER consists essentially of a weighted, sealed,
long-necked glass bulb that is immersed in
the liquid being measured; the depth of
flotation gives an indication of liquid density,
and the neck can be calibrated to read
density, specific gravity, or some other
related characteristic.
ANEROID Aneroid barometer is an instrument used for
measuring atmospheric pressure. It uses a
BAROMETER small flexible material box called a vaccum
chamber (capsule), which is made from an
alloy of beryllium and copper.
A barograph is a barometer that records the
barometric pressure over time in graphical
form. This instrument is also used to make a
BAROGRAPH continuous recording of atmospheric
pressure. The pressure-sensitive element, a
partially evacuated metal cylinder, is linked to
a pen arm in such a way that the vertical
displacement of the pen is proportional to the
changes in the atmospheric pressure.
A thermometer is an instrument that
measures temperature. It can measure the
temperature of a solid such as food,
THERMOMETER a liquid such as water, or a gas such as air.
The three most common units
of measurement for temperature are Celsius,
Fahrenheit, and kelvin.
A wind vane (also known as a weathervane)
is an instrument that tells you the wind
direction. Specifically, a wind vane lets you
know what direction the wind is coming from.
WIND VANE In other words, a “southwest” reading on a
wind vane means that the wind is originating
southwest of your location, and heading in a
northeast direction.
Pyrometer also is known as an Infrared
thermometer or Radiation thermometer or
non-contact thermometer used to detect the
temperature of an object’s surface
temperature, which depends on the radiation
PYROMETER (infrared or visible) emitted from the object.
Pyrometers act as photodetector because of
the property of absorbing energy and
measuring of EM wave intensity at any
wavelength.
