2. Graph y = x 2 + 1, and determine the domain and range. Then determine whether
the equation is a function, is one-to-one, onto, both, or neither. State whether it is

When an equation represents a function, the variable, often x, with values making up the
domain is called the independent variable. The other variable, often y, is called the
dependent variable because its values depend on x.

~ Structure The symbol Equations that represent functions are often written in function notation. The equation
f(x) replaces they and is read

2 Sketch Graphs of Nonlinear Functions The key features for sketching the
graph of a nonlinear function include all of the key features for linear functions, as
well as some additional information that may be provided.
Symmetry A function has reflectional symmetry if there is a vertical line that divides the
graph of the function into two halves that are mirror images of each other.
Sketching the graph of a nonlinear function is similar to sketching the graph of a linear
function. First plot points based on the known key features of the graph. Then draw lines
or curves to connect these points if the graph is known to be continuous.
Sketch a graph passing through the points. Note that more than one graph may be
possible. Check that the graph matches the other given key features.

The f(x)-coordinates of points on the graph are all real numbers less than -3 and all

2 Solve Equations by Using Graphs of Related Functions The solution of an
equation is called the root of the equation. The root of an equation is related to the
zero of a function. The zero of a function f is the value of x for which f(x) = 0. Because
y = f(x) gives the graph of the function f f(x) = 0 translates to y = 0 and the zero of the
function is the same as the x-intercept of the graph.
