BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Philippine Music is divided into four eras or traditions, namely the Ethnic,
Spanish Colonial, American Colonial and Contemporary tradition. The
majority of Philippine Music revolves around cultural influences from the
West, due primarily to the Spanish and American rule for over three
centuries.
Renaissance and Philippine Pre-Colonial Colonial Music
Pre-colonial Period
In earlier times, Filipino music was greatly
influenced by trade relations with different
races such as: Indonesians, Malays,
Chinese, Arabs, Indo-Chinese, Hindus and
Japanese. During this trade, the Japanese,

their five-tone scale called pentatonic. The
Hindus and Mohammedans brought the
rhythmic effects through the use of drums, cymbals and gongs while the
Japanese and Chinese brought the reed type of instruments.
